Mark Twain Medical Center Opens Specialty Care Clinic. Serving the Needs of Patients for Hepatitis and Gastroenterology Care
San Andreas, CA....May 1, 2013 Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) Hospital President Craig Marks announced that Ian Renner, MD, will serve patients at the Mark Twain Medical Center Specialty Care Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatitis on the hospital campus in San Andreas. "Having access to specialists in Calaveras County is a critical health care need for the community," said Marks, adding "Dr. Renner is a highly respected and skilled physician."
"Chronic Hepatitis C is quickly becoming a serious public health problem in the United States," reported Dr. Renner. A smoldering epidemic called Hepatitis C already affects an estimated 4 million Americans, and about 200 million people worldwide, most of whom don't even realize they are infected by this deadly virus!
The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that there are 170,000 new cases are added each year. More than 4 times as many people are infected with Hepatitis C than HIV-AIDS. This virus can hide in the human body for two or three decades often without causing adverse symptoms—and then wreak havoc with the liver, scarring it so extensively that it can fail. Half of all people waiting for liver transplants have hepatitis C.
Now is the time for diagnosis, possible treatment, and hopefully freedom from this debilitating, progressive and possibly fatal disease. Our staff specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis. We are here to meet with all patients and assist them with their hepatitis treatment options.
Dr. Renner completed his internal medicine and gastroenterology residencies at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia after receiving his Medical Degree from Otago University Medical School in Dunedin, New Zealand. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. He taught and conducted research programs in Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Dr. Renner was Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California School of Medicine where he practiced for twenty years.
"Gastroenterology is just one of the many specialty care services that MTMC will be providing for the residents in the Tri-County area," added Marks, "In the very near future MTMC will be expanding on new and existing specialty services to provide the best possible care to those that need specialty care close to home."
