33rd annual COPPEROPOLIS ROAD RACE 2013

Copperopolis, CA... The Date for the Copperopolis Road Race or the Paris–Roubaix of California is Saturday March 30, 2013. The race will run in the Milton/Salt Spring Valley. Planned Times: 6-8 a.m. Course Set-Up 8 a.m. -1 p.m. Racing events 1 pm to 4 pm, Course Cleanup Course Description: A 21-mile loop of Calaveras County Roads starting and finishing in Milton, CA. The Loop: MIlton Road, Rock Creek Road, Salt Spring Valley Road (straight), Hunt Road, Milton Road. Start in Milton, finish 1/4 east on Hunt Road just east of Landfill driveway...

As in the past, we are asking for closure of the loop to all but local residential traffic, with the exceptions of Milton Road (open) the westernmost 1/4 mile of Hunt Road (for access to the landfill), and Rock Creek between Salt Spring Valley Road and the Dam. All of the roads are normally very light traffic, with the exception of Milton Road. The race has gained a reputation as a classic, one of the toughest one-day races on the West Coast, due to hills, pavement conditions, potential weather conditions, and the competition. It is known as the “Paris-Roubaix” of California.

Facilities: Parking would be in Milton along roadways and around the hall in the center of town. Signage will indicate to riders “Park at least 3 feet from pavement” along Milton Road and “Don’t block driveways”. Three parking monitors will guide parking, and at least one monitor will roam to check on compliance. Signs at registration will remind riders to use the 15 portable toilets located around town. Riders can be disqualified for violations. Registration and toilets (portable) will be also be located here. Portable toilets will also be located at the finish line (Hunt Road just east of the landfill access) and the feed zone, 1 1/2 miles up Rock Creek from Milton.

Traffic Control: Monitors supplied by the organizers can man the intersections along the route, all experienced and equipped with traffic safety equipment (barricades, signs, vests, flags, stop/slow paddles). Signage warning of the event in progress (Special Event, Flagman Ahead, Prepare to Stop, Caution Bicycle Race) will be posted at the intersections, and letters informing residents and property owners will be delivered to all in the area, explaining the events. Local newspapers will also provide information on the events, including course maps. Radio communications will be established along the course and with follow vehicles. Prior to the race, a crew will check the route for rocks and other debris, and remove any necessary.

Course Clean-Up: Following the race, race personnel will pick up any trash or debris left behind along the course and in the parking areas and along the entire course.

Top riders are always expected. Levi Leipheimer, of the Tour of California, has won the event two times in the past six years.

Safety/Insurance: Course debris will be swept and hazards will be marked with traffic cones during set-up. Two first aid stations and EMTs will be located on the course. The race will be covered under USA Cycling’s $2,000,000 liability policy with the County named as additionally insured. All of the riders will be covered under the USAC's medical insurance.

Activities: No booths selling products are involved; no alcohol is served or sold. Riders warm-up, race and then come back to the registration area for results and prizes. Most then depart; Many riders stay at motels in Calaveras County or camp at campgrounds; many also buy food and/or meals at stores/restaurants in the County, and gas at local gas stations.

Organizers: The race will be organized by the non profit Golden Chain Cyclists, and Velo Promo, LLC, the cycling events and programs company based in Soulsbyville, the same organizers as since 1982. Velo Promo conducts some 40 other days of racing in California and Nevada this year. A portion of race profits each year go to the Milton Cemetery fund of the Keystone Masonic Lodge (estimate this year $1500)..
