Foothill Conservancy welcomes new Executive Director Cecily Smith
Pine Grove, CA...Foothill Conservancy is pleased to announce the appointment of a new executive director, Cecily Smith. Cecily brings with her over 10 years’ experience working for environmental nonprofit organizations. Before joining the Foothill Conservancy, Cecily was the Water Resources Specialist for Prairie Rivers Network, Illinois’ only statewide river protection and conservation nonprofit. Her program work included reform of Illinois water supply management policies and reviewing and writing comments on Section 404 dredge and fill permit applications to the Army Corps of Engineers. She also worked toward reform of the Corps’ project processes and management policies on the Upper Mississippi River....
“I’m a native Californian and spent most of my growing up years in different parts of the state from southern to central California.” Cecily said. “My love of the outdoors grew directly from experiencing California’s incredibly varied natural areas. My first visit to the Sierra Nevada was a junior high ski trip to Yosemite. I don’t remember the skiing, but I do remember constantly looking up and around me, in awe of the snow-covered granite walls and trees.”
Cecily holds a B.A. in English from the University of Southern California, a law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, and a Masters in Public Administration with emphasis on environmental policy from Northern Arizona University.
After working briefly as a lawyer, Cecily recognized that her true interests lay elsewhere. “I love the law,” Cecily said, “But with time I realized that my real interest was environmental policy, and I wanted to work for a nonprofit or public agency.
“I’m excited and proud to be working for the Foothill Conservancy, an organization with a long history of achieving major victories to protect the Mokelumne River and its home counties,” Cecily said. “I’m so happy to be home in California, living in a landscape of my heart. The icing on the cake is to also be helping strengthen an already amazing organization dedicated to protecting and conserving the resources and communities that make the Sierra foothills unique.”
“We’re really excited to have Cecily on board,” said Foothill Conservancy Board President Katherine Evatt. “She has great experience and skills, and we’re sure she’s going to do a wonderful job. We hope everyone will give her a warm welcome to our community.”
Cecily looks forward to meeting local residents and hopes they will stop by the office to learn more about the Foothill Conservancy’s current projects. You can reach her by e-mail at cecily@foothillconservancy.org or by phone at 209.295.4900. end
