Letter to the Editor~by Mark Campbell Superintendent Calaveras Unified

Jenny Lind, CA...This is to address allegations of purported health/safety issues at Jenny Lind Elementary specific to portable classrooms. There were formal complaints filed with CAL-OSHA regarding alleged issues and concerns with HVAC maintenance, indoor air quality, mold in the classrooms and the impact of bird droppings (from nested Cliff Swallows) ---all relative to potential health and safety concerns....

CUSD recently received the final report from CAL-OSHA which outlined the final findings in response to the complaints. The findings were that CUSD needs to do a better job of documenting HVAC maintenance (which we have already addressed and improved upon) and that we need to do a better job of controlling the Cliff Swallows (which we are presently working on---balancing the need to pro-actively control the nesting while making sure we are properly handling this specific to the birds themselves). The findings were accurate in that CUSD does need to do a better job of addressing these areas and we have already initiated action to do so. The Jenny Lind Elementary custodial staff in conjunction with our CUSD Maintenance Department have been, and will continue to be, working together to effectively address these areas.

I think it is important to note that, in this report, there were no findings that would validate any allegation that there was, or is, a health or safety issue with our facilities at Jenny Lind Elementary. There have never been any findings that there have ever been any health or safety issues regarding indoor air quality or mold in the classrooms. This has been validated as we have worked in conjunction with Calaveras County Public Health, Calaveras County Environmental Health, our Safety and Health Consultants who deal with property/liability issues as well as CAL-OSHA to address any and all allegations.

Knowing that providing a healthy and safe environment for staff and students is a top priority for CUSD, I feel that our efforts and outcomes have been validated by all agencies we work with.

Mark Campbell
