Ramsey Fire Update...1,155 Acres, 45% Contained, 477 Souls Battling Fire and 4 Injuries

Ganns Meadow, CA..Summary: There was some westward movement of the fire during the night shift with slow rates of spread. Steep terrain and limited access along the Stanislaus River is a major concern and are making direct line construction along the fire challenging for crews. There is still high potential for burning material to roll out over the control lines. Mop-up of the fire is slow due to the heavy amounts of fuels adjacent to the line and steep terrain.

Bill Goff, a lifelong resident of the county, expresses his gratitude to the crews that saved his new home (still under construction) in Ganns meadow.

Ramsey Fire

Location: Hwy 4, 8 miles East of Dorrington

Acres Burned: 1,155

Structures Threatened:

16

Containment: 45%

Structures Destroyed:

0

Fire Started: August 11, 2012

Injuries:

4

Cause: Escaped Campfire

Crews will be flown to the bottom of the fire on the west side to support yesterday’s retardant lines. Crews will attempt direct fire line construction to reinforce the retardant lines.

A portable retardant mixing plant was established in Bear Valley for helicopters to have a closer source of retardant for the fire. Fire retardant reduces the flammability of fuels, delays their combustion and is more effective then water.

As the Ramsey Fire continues to burn in the Stanislaus National Forest, residents and visitors may be impacted by smoke. Smoke is typically greater in the morning and evening hours. Plan your outdoor activities for times and places with low smoke levels. Up-slope breezes occur during the day, which will often take smoke into higher elevations. In the evening, these winds change direction and bring smoke down slope to lower elevations.

People traveling on Highway 4 should expect extended delays due to the fire crews, as well as fire and heavy smoke crossing the road. Crews will be mopping up areas along Highway 4 and chipping down material. Please use caution and watch out for firefighters. Also expect areas of smoke drifting across the road causing limited visibility.

South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team is assigned to the Ramsey Fire. An Incident Base Camp has been established at the Bear Valley Ski Area. For current Ramsey fire information call 951-297-3495.

Total personnel assigned to the Fire: 477

When the USFS Helicopter pilot talks to dispatch he always says he has x number of "souls" onboard and the amount of fuel he has when he is returning or leaving base. I thought it is an apt descriptor those working the fire! There are men and women with families, lives, hopes, dreams and souls working the Ramsey.

Thank you CalFire for saving properties threatened by such a powerful enemy, Fire! You gave my buddy, Bill Goff, his family, friends and their surrounding neighbors a gift. I am grateful for all the hard work and dedication you demonstrate saving homes, wildlife, etc daily! CalFire - as a homeowner in Calaveras County - you have filled so many hearts with gratitude!

Ditto! Well said - if it weren't for all the heroic efforts of all entities involved we would have lost our cabin which is still under construction! Many, many heartfelt thanks.

      Hi Bill,
Thank you for posting well deserved thanks to our firefighters. I know this is a negative but I've seen this happen over and over again. The thank you signs come out, everyone is so grateful, but when fire fighters need a raise, or even any pay or training, in the days of all volunteer fire departments, or now, with a new fire tax coming out, everyone will be bi---ing and complaining and will not one to pay one read dime for firefighters. I hope that changes, but I wouldn't count on it.
