Helping Your Grieving Child Return to School
For most children, the start of a new school year means excitement, new friends, new teachers and the comfort of getting back to a routine. But for children grieving the death of someone they love, a new school year can mean sadness, loneliness and fear. “Children who are suffering the loss of someone they love must be given special care and attention – especially during hectic times such as the start of a new school year” said Ann ....

Metherd, Volunteer Coordinator for Hospice of Amador and Calaveras. “Even though the child may be happy to attend school and see their old friends, there is an underlying uncertainty that can be very distressing when compounded with grief.” This is also true of children who are anticipating the loss of a loved one due to illness.
If you have a child returning to school while dealing with grief, try preparing them using these tips:
Talk to your child about his worries and concerns. If he fears crying in class or being teased or left out of activities, develop a plan on how to handle each situation. Discuss the morning and afternoon routines so he knows what to expect.
Go over the plans as many times, and in as many ways, as possible. Feeling a loss of control is normal for children in grief. Be sure your child is comfortable with the situation and that he knows whom he can turn to if he begins to feel frenzied.
Speak with your child’s teacher and the school counselor to make them aware of your child’s situation and emotional circumstance. Grief in the classroom can show itself as disruptive, unfocused, sluggish, angry, reclusive, and any number of behaviors. Sometimes bullying issues pop up with the grieving child. The child may be acting as the bully because of misplaced anger, or as the one being bullied because of withdrawn and quiet behavior. Additionally, teachers should keep in mind that focusing on tests and homework assignments may be too much to ask in the beginning.
Ask the teacher to discuss with your child an “I’m feeling overwhelmed” plan. Sometimes all a child needs is a moment to step out of the classroom, get a drink of water, or in some cases, he may need to speak with the school counselor or nurse.
“How deeply a child experiences grief depends on the child’s relationship to the deceased, the child’s age, and emotional development” said Tammy Beilstein, also of Hospice of Amador and Calaveras, “but children do experience grief very deeply. Just as returning to work after a death is difficult for adults, asking a grieving child to return to school is equally as tough”.
Hospice of Amador and Calaveras has a Griefbuster program available for children ages 3-19 who are experiencing grief due to the death of someone they love. The program is completely free of charge. Hospice volunteers specially trained in grief work meet one-on-one with the grieving child, at the child’s school, once per week for as long as the child needs them.
To learn more about the Griefbuster program, please call Ann or Tammy at Hospice of Amador and Calaveras at (209) 223-5500. You may also find them on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/HospiceofAmadorandCalaveras or on the Hospice website at www.HospiceofAmador.org.
