Ramsey Fire Evening Update... 1,000 Acres, 30% Contained.

Ganns Meadow, CA...Summary: Crews will continue suppression efforts through the night. Moderate fire behavior was observed on all divisions throughout the day shift. Steep terrain and limited access along the Stanislaus River are a major concern and are making direct line construction along the southwestern edge of the fire unsafe for crews. With the large numbers of fire incidents burning throughout the state, critical resources such as hand crews and fire engines have been difficult the obtain.

As the Ramsey Fire continues to burn in the Stanislaus National Forest, residents and visitors may be impacted by smoke. Smoke impacts will be greater in the morning and evening hours. Plan your outdoor activities for times and places with low smoke levels. Up-slope breezes occur during the day, which will often take smoke into higher elevations. In the evening, these winds change direction and bring smoke down slope to lower elevations.

The Ramsey Fire started on Saturday August 11, 2012 from an escaped campfire near the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. People traveling on Highway 4 should expect extended delays and partial closures due the fire crews, fire and heavy smoke across the road.

South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team is assigned to Ramsey Fire. An Incident Base Camp has been established at the Bear Valley Ski Area. For current Ramsey fire information call 951-297-3495.

thanks for the late evening update.
at least we can have our windows open a little longer tonight before the smoke returns. we hit a record high of 91.4 inside. we can tolerate that when we know fire fighters are working so hard for our beloved forest.

thank you. we are using the old fashioned technique of wetting sheets, putting them over us and then directing the fans to blow across... an old remedy that works well.
we were able to keep the house open last night for the first time in a week so that helped. each of us should try and take the time to check on seniors or those who may be disabled, to make sure they are o.k.....again, thank you for your concern.

I understand this fire is under NFS control but is the air support Cal Fire? I see the air tankers flying all day to and from this area. Paul

By the way, I really appreciate all the hard work done by everyone to control this fire under difficult conditions.

Ramsey Firefighters Stung!

MyMotherLode commented about firefighters being severly stung by a swarm of bees. One month ago my daughtet and I happened upon a large beekeeping setup complete with electric fence on the forest road in the fire zone. Who permitted such a business to operate on public land? Don't get me wrong...I know the importance of bees right now...but couldn't the proprietor of said business warn the firefighters or even try to save those millions (yes, it WAS a large set up) of bees? Firefighters are also a precious resource!..Prather Meadow Cabin Owner

Different bees. Some varieties of meat bees live in the ground and can be as aggressive as African killer bees when disturbed, swarming and following their perceived antagonists long distances, clinging to victims while biting and stinging. Domestic bees will defend their hive but not nearly to the extent of the natives. Beekeeping on National Forest land is a good thing. Domesticated bees are a threatened national resource which deserves our support. Many agricultural crops depend on kept bees for pollination. Scientists are trying to figure out why so many hive bees are dying off. When the bees finish their work in the Central Valley, their keepers sometimes take them upslope, almost like taking the cattle up to the highland grazing areas. Please don't blame the domestic bees for the problems with the wild ones. I've experienced ground bee attacks while cutting firewood as have many of my friends, and that's what happened to the firefighters.
