Sky High Ranch Subdivision Fire Update from Joel Barnett
Bear Valley, CA...I checked the fire again from Wes and Barbara’s house Weather Top, which is literally the highest house in Calaveras County. The fire remains +/- 2 miles away. It seems to be moving up the river canyon and the up the canyon walls. The bulk of the fire passed behind the old Ganns Meadow Inn and that cluster of cabins and the new log home at Ganns. There were vehicles and crew assigned to each structure, like sentries. It has burned right up to the highway in paces and jumped across the highway in little clumps, which are quickly put out. The burning front edge of the fire appears to now be up canyon and closer to us from Ganns....

We’ve had weird, hot weather without most of the afternoon breeze we’re used to in the summer. Last night there was a good downpour in BV but not in Sky High. The wind switched to down canyon and we slept with the windows open until 4:00 when I woke up choking on smoke. It’s quite smoky here in BV today.
They’ve set up a whole command center across the highway on our airstrip. The circus has come to town.
With the way they protected all structures in Ganns right in the middle of the fire, I can’t imaging they wouldn’t just dump a helicopter’s worth of water right on my house if it got to that. But right now Sky High does not seem threatened.
Yesterday a Forest Service truck came through the neighborhood and told everyone to flee. I got blamed at the BV fire station for telling everyone to evacuate. It wasn’t me. And while I don’t think homeowners should come up right now to their cabins, I don’t feel the need to evacuate. If Big Meadow campground starts burning, I’ll change my tune.

If it were not for the "circus" you probably would be evacuated!

Joel...we know that you mean all the big equipment, planes, helicopters, uniforms, and needed action is like a "circus". Not sure how anyone could have misinterpreted that. Plus we know how often you volunteer to do aide and rescues yourself. Thanks again for the updates.

So far it seems that this fire is clearing out the duff and ground fuel without taking so many trees. It is creating a fire break from potential future fires coming up that canyon. There is an impressive display of equipment at Ganns to protect structures, but the fire seems to be doing more good than harm in my opinion.

Yes, Cal Fire, CDF, air tankers, spotters & helicopters did a remarkable job defending the structures on the south side of the road. We are building a cabin up on a knoll and if it weren't for these hard working firefighters - we would have lost our cabin. They created a firebreak using a bulldozer and fought hard to attack the fire & hot spots. This fire lived & breathed like a demon - escalating up the slopes & then it would be sucked back down into the canyon again only to come raging back up. Trees literally exploding. Very dangerous work and we are so appreciative - my family has owned property in Gann's Meadow for decades. They saved all of our cabins & structures on the south side of the road. We hope they can get the fire contained soon - it's such rugged, steep terrain making it so difficult to navigate. Our thoughts & prayers are with fellow neighbors up the road, fire and air crews.

I would like to remind everyone that just because you dont see forest service hot shot crews does mean they are not on the fire. As a former Stanislaus hotshot I often get frustrated that they are not acknowledge. This fire was one of the more challenging I have seen in my 20 years with the forest service in suppression. We have working on this fire some of the best I have worked with. I challenge anyone to strap on 35-45 lbs of gear, pack a chain saw and hike that bone stripping terrain. I A was two shot crews that hiked into this fire at dusk and then night fall and worked through the night to start from the bottom, anchor in and start the long slow process of constructing hand line. All they had was what they carried with them. The FS, State and local engines started prepping the structures at the top of the canyon for if and when the fire came at them. I have first hand knowledge of the access issues of this fire, I hiked into the heal of the fire, some of the nastiest terrain I have had the pleasure of standing on. One more thing, the daytime temps were stifling and night time recovery was little to nothing.

Yes, a huge thank you to the Hot Shots that worked with such great efforts & determination in such challenging terrain - I can't imagine trying to carry tools, backpacks, etc. in such a rugged environment with granite, trees, duff, brushes and steepness - in the heat & dark! You are heroes! Thank you!
We appreciate you putting your lives on the line!
Gary & Debbie Damele - Gann's Meadow
(Our cabin under construction & the surrounding land weathered the fire storm thanks to the bulldozed fire line along with everyone's efforts - including the Hot Shot crews!!!)

Thanks to The Pine Tree & Joel Barnett for all the info on the Ramsey Fire. I've been scouring the web for "news" since the fire started. Could see the flames from the deck of my home at Sky High at night. Big thanks to the firefighters (on the ground and in the air) who are putting their lives on the line to protect the homes affected.

Circus...Really?

"The circus has come to town" - What a moronic thing to say. I really don't care if you wrote in jest. The fire is not funny and your comment was out-of-line. You should apologize and restate it.

Wow, take a breath. I have been grateful to Joel for all the info and help he has sent out to all in the BV area. He has repeatedly checked on my, and many other families' properties for us during this time. He volunteers for rescue and fire. If you look up the definition of "circus" it can mean "traveling wagons, tents, cages, and equipment", which is how he was describing the scene where the firefighters were staging the equipment near the BV airstrip...you know, like planes, helicopters, tents, and equipment. Instead of trying to interpret things literally and come down on him for a reasonable description of a staged scene, you should be thanking him for all the help he has given so many of us when he also has his own home and business to worry about. Oh, and maybe you could give him an apology and restate your comment too. BillG

As a firefighter I’ve been in fire camps throughout the west. I’ve yet to be in or hear of one that wasn’t operating like a 24/7 circus. It’s when it starts to look like a leisure camp that I would get worried.

The inability to perceive humor in proper perspective is a medical condition called, I believe, grumpitude. This ailment was shared by the bees which stung the firefighters. Whoever wrote the "moronic" comment should tell us who they are so that personnel approaching this person can wear proper protective gear.
Only a person who doesn't know Joel could misinterpret his comment. The ability to keep a cheerful spirit while providing community service is a virtue, and Joel has it in full. I'm a fulltime resident up here and I know many of the firefighters. They joke all the time, and it's an essential element of team morale.
The writer of that comment should go to the hospital and get a grumpectomy. They say no good deed goes unpunished, and it's the grumps of the world who go far out of their way to criticize a person who volunteers so much of his time to the community with a smile on his face.

Ditto!
Thanks, Joel, for the updates. Much appreciated. Your sense of community and willingness to go above and beyond the call does not go unnoticed. And a big shout out to the fire fighters. We can only imagine the difficult job that have to do.

And, another ditto!! Thank you Joel. Your update was very informative, especially for us "down the hill" neighbors who are also very concerned about "our" mountain. I hope the fire is contained soon and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the firefighters and the circus they bring with them! Gayle Moore

Once these fires get into the 2nd or 3rd day and all of the infrastructure is mobilized it definitely takes on a circus like atmosphere in a good sense. You have mobile kitchens, equipment repair, mobile fueling stations, inmate crews, fire crews, mapping trailers, communications trailers and on and on. Thanks Joel for the Updates!!

Now we know why Skyhigh has so much drama, there are too many grumpy idiots that get sensitive over the pettiest of things. Like the use of a term that doesn't always have a negative connotation... unless of course, you're a negative person looking for a reason to blather.

Please don't let this "bump" in the road keep you from supplying those of us that appreciate the information from accessing it! I can't believe how this has turned so negative. Thanks again Joel!
