Errant Wide Load Cause of Hwy 49 Closure
Mokelumne Hill, CA...CHP has issued a release on this morning's incident that snarled traffic on Hwy 49 for over 3 hours. At approximately 9:40am this morning a big rig hauling a modular home, escorted by two pilot cars, was traveling southbound on Hwy 49 near the top of the Mokelumne Grade. The vehicle with "wide load" signs front and back, was allowed to drift to the right of the southbound lane where it crossed the asphalt curb...
We would like to thank Tammy Beilstein for the shot of the incident!!
Upon crossing the asphalt curb the right wheels became lodged on the inside curve and could not be driven back onto the roadway. The truck and tractor remained stuck approximately 3 turns from the top of the Mokelumne Grade until a heavy duty tow truck could free the entire vehicle. The vehicle was determined to be properly permitted and in compliance with CALTRANS regulations.
Intermittent road closures were in effect for approximately 3 hours.
