Final Pinecrest Shoreline Management Plan Released to the Public

Sonora, CA... Supplemental to a license agreement with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), in coordination with the Stanislaus National Forest, today released the final Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for Pinecrest Lake to the public. The SMP is available at www.pinecrestlakeupdate.com or copies can be obtained at the Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Sonora or the Summit Ranger District Office in Pinecrest, Calif...

Pinecrest Lake is within the Pinecrest Recreation Area; a popular recreation destination managed by the Stanislaus National Forest and located approximately 80 miles east of Modesto, Calif. Pinecrest Lake is jointly managed by the Forest Service and PG&E. The Forest Service manages recreation facilities at the lake and PG&E manages the lake for hydroelectric power generation purposes.

The SMP is one of the FERC conditions on PG&E’s license for the Spring Gap-Stanislaus Hydroelectric Project. Development of an SMP was required by FERC to assist in managing Pinecrest Lake’s shoreline. Public interest in the development of the SMP has been high since the Spring Gap-Stanislaus Project license was issued by FERC in 2009. While not required by FERC to solicit public comments, PG&E recognized the importance of the public's interest, established a public comment period, and accepted over 150 public comments on the draft plan for consideration. As a result, several changes were made to the final SMP.

In addition to the SMP, PG&E will enhance recreational facilities at Pinecrest Lake over the next three years by improving beaches, trails, bathrooms, campgrounds, parking lots and roads. These upgrades will enhance access to the lake with better traffic circulation, parking, boat launch and dock facilities, fish cleaning station, trails and beach and swimming facilities.

For more information on the Shoreline Management Plan, contact Justin Smith with PG&E at 916-923-7038. News media can also contact PG&E on their 24-hour media line at (415) 973-5930. For more information regarding the Pinecrest Recreation Area, contact the Summit Ranger District at 209-965-3434.
