Governor Brown Signs Wesley Shermantine Temporary Release Bill ~By Charity Maness
Sacramento, CA...AB 2357 was first presented in April 2012 and signed into law on July 17, 2012. This bill will allow convicted serial killer Wesley Shermantine a ‘get out of jail free’ card for up to three days for the purpose of permitting the inmate to participate in or assist with the gathering of evidence relating to crimes...
Arrested in 1999 and originally convicted of four murders, Wesley Shermantine received the death penalty and childhood friend Loren Herzog - together dubbed the ‘speed killers’ – received 77 years reduced to 14 and paroled in 2010, to commit suicide in 2012. Shermantine’s parents owned a cabin in San Andreas where multiple remains were found in February 2012 with the help of the FBI’s evidence recovery team. One set of remains belonged to Clements resident 25 year old Cyndi Vanderheiden, missing since 1998.
In a recent hand drawn map sent to Bounty Hunter Leonard Padilla, who had promised to pay 33,000 to Shermantine for information leading to the location of buried victims, Shermantine outlined possible locations of more victim’s bodies in the farmland and outlying areas surrounding his childhood home of Linden. Officials in Oregon, Nevada and Utah are also looking into connections between unsolved murders in their states with Hertzog and Shermantine .
The bill, drafted primarily for direct help from inmates, supersedes local law enforcement objections. The authority extended to the states corrections secretary will be withdrawn on January 1, 2013.
