WEEKLY ADDRESS: An All-Hands-On-Deck Approach to Fighting the Colorado Wildfires

Colorado Springs, CO...In this week’s address, President Obama spoke to the American people from Colorado, where he had just finished touring areas impacted by the devastating Waldo Canyon fire, meeting with first responders as well as families affected by the fires. The President thanked the brave firefighters and countless volunteers who are providing food, water, and shelter to those in need, and made clear that his administration will continue to bring all resources available to assist efforts to combat the fires. The federal government has marshaled thousands of firefighters, hundreds of fire engines, and more than 100 aircraft, including 19 airtankers that are available for us as of today, to support firefighting efforts in a number of Western states including Colorado....

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
Colorado Springs, CO
June 30, 2012

Hello, everybody. I'm here in Colorado Springs, visiting some of the devastating fires that have been taking place over the last several days. As many of you have been watching on television, entire communities are under threat. And we had a chance to tour some of the devastation that has been taking place in some of the subdivisions here.

Firefighters are working 18 hours a day, around the clock, trying to make sure that they get this blaze under control. We've got volunteers who are out here who are making sure that these firefighters have the food and the water and all the resources that they need. And we've been engaging in some unprecedented coordination between federal, state, and local communities to try to bring this fire under control.

And one of the things I've done here, in addition to saying thank you to these firefighters, is to let them know that all of America has their back. One of the things that happens, whether it's a fire here in Colorado, or a tornado in Alabama or Missouri, or a flood or a hurricane in Florida, one of the things that happens here in America is when we see our fellow citizens in trouble and having difficulty, we come together as one American family, as one community. And you see that spirit and you see that strength here in Colorado Springs, where people are working together, promising each other to rebuild. We've got to make sure that we are there with them every step of the way, even after this fire is put out.

So for those of you who can provide some help, you should get on the online site of the American Red Cross. They're very active in this community and you can make your contributions there. We're going to continue to make sure that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Forest Service, our military and National Guard and all the resources that we have available at the federal level are brought to bear in fighting this fire.

But this is a good reminder of what makes us Americans. We don't just look out for ourselves; we look out for each other. And one of the things that I told these firefighters is that we can provide them all the resources they need, but only they provide the courage and the discipline to be able to actually fight these fires. And it's important that we appreciate what they do not just when our own communities are struck by disaster. It's important that we remember what they do each and every single day, and that we continue to provide support to our first responders, our emergency management folks, our firefighters, our military -- everybody who helps secure our liberty and our security each and every day.

So, America, I hope you guys remember the folks during these times of need. I know this is a little bit unusual -- we don't usually do weekly addresses like this, but I thought it was a good opportunity for us to actually focus attention on a problem that's going on here in Colorado Springs. We never know when it might be our community that's threatened, and it's important that we're there for them.

Thank you very much.

Mr President, thank you SO much for taking time from your fundraising schedule to address us hear in Colorado Springs. I know that it has been difficult for you to find the time to get here, especially when it doesn't represent taking in millions of donations for your re-election. Since the fires here have been raging for nearly 4 weeks it is really heartwarmer to hear your support. It would have been nice if your remarks were not coming from a telepromter. Oh well it is always good when a sitting President comes to ease everyones concerns and let us know that Obama money is on the way. Thank you! Sorry this disasster took place because I do realize it has messed up your schedule for fundraising. Maybe the next time you could just send Mr Biden so we can all laugh at him, levity is always good.

What a joke this comment is! Truly, he is d**med if he does, and d**med if he doesn't. So sick of the haters. At least he does the work of a real President (healthcare, military, the economy) and not just an aging frat boy who ran up the credit card.

Mittens Romney will out spend Obama easily as his main contributors are $Billionaires such as Shelden Adelson who admits he funds Romney with his profits from his prostitutes in Macau. Romney $Billionaires are hoping the wealthy can continue their capture of the Government so tax policy, and environmental laws, and bank regulations (non) are in their favor. The result is more income inequality, more cancer, and illnesses ,death because regulation is their enemy.

Citizens United allows unlimited secret cash from foreign countries to flow into our elections.

Of course the super pac $ is not coordinated with the Romney campaign (wink ,wink)

Your sense of reality is really messed up. Obviously you are on some sort of Government dole and it scares you to realize the gig is about up. There is no longer enough money to pay for eveyone"s problems in life so you better realize you need to get off your lazy butt and get it done yourself. The Government (Obama) is killing you slowly but it doesn't matter to those that have their hands out and are on the Government dole. Wake up before you are standing in line waiting for your milk and cheese.

Friend, I am willing to bet that , based upon your comment, I make 3x what you do, have many more years of post-graduate education, pay FAR more taxes than you, and frankly more intelligence than you. Give us all a break, get educated, and LEARN, don't just continue to be a sheep following representatives that only love big money and themselves. You are the ones that will wake up in a sad situation one of these days. THINK!

Yikes! Well thanks so much for paying all them taxes and making so much mula, when I am playing my geeetar on the street will you please throw in a sheckel?

I am surprised to hear Mitt is going to outspend Barack...I am not sure where that money will come from, Barack has taken in a ton more than Mitt and continues to do so. Hollywierd is jumpin' on his bandwagon helpin' poor ole Barack fill those coffers up to the brim...even after the other Republikans fell out Mitt still could not keep up with the fund raisin' of the Barack threshin machine. Not that the Prez hasn't been wurkin hard fur it, that old airplane we give him is on the road, I mean in the ski all da time. Unless Mitt and his boyz are falsifying those filings at the Federal Election Commission that is, they are on the back end of the Barack mule. Lessen they are liein the Prez had 110 million in the bank on May 31st and Mitt only had 17 million...ur probably write, Mitt better get sum ill begotten gains to help him out, otherwise he will be joinin me with my geeeetar. But that is ok, Newt is wid me playin his banjo.

Thanx fur sharin' ur intellect and lofty oversight with us, knew there waz a reason fur turning this thing on.

Wasn't that great!! A president that has enough cajones to strap on a S3B and make an arrested carrier landing and addressing not only our wonderful troops but the world from a fighting warship!
Damn he's my type of guy. Shucks "W" and his dad even served this once wonderful country.
Your chap seems to only be able to strap on a teleprompter.
I guess my vote will cancel yours as I sure as hell don't want some community organizer at the helm of this country.......

Why don't we all just roll over and let the wealthy, banks and corporations do what they want?

It would be a conservatives wet dream.

              We're almost there.

How's it been working for the majority?

Oh, bull, if you know anything you know that Presidential and other dignitary visits get in the way of emergency responses.

Your criticism is highly misplaced. But since you bring it up, remember Bush, when he merely flew over New Orleans.

            Nifty trick!

Defend a bald assertion without lifting a finger by preemptively declaring any potential challenger to be "beyond help". Some might refer to this tactic as "poisoning the well", but of course they're hopelessly deluded anyway, so their opinions don't even deserve consideration.
