New Master Food Preserver Program Offers Free Classes!
Calaveras/Amador Counties, CA...Home gardens are flourishing throughout the county and more people are interested in eating what they grow or what they find at their local farmers’ market. Sometimes this interest is health related; sometimes it’s driven by economic necessity. And sometimes it’s just fun to grow and eat your own food! But what do you do with a bumper crop of tomatoes, peppers or strawberries? Learn how to preserve them so you can enjoy the bounty produced by your garden all year!....
Master Food Preserver Dale Ansel at the 2012 Calaveras County Fair
The University of California Cooperative Extension in Central Sierra is excited to announce the start of a new program in Calaveras and Amador counties: Master Food Preservers. This volunteer group shares research based information about safe home food preservation and food safety. Master Food Preservers will provide monthly classes to demonstrate how to safely preserve food through a variety of processes.
Our first public event was at the Calaveras County Fair from May 17-20 where we received a wonderful welcome from the community. Look for us next at the Amador County Fair starting on July 26; we’ll be next to the Master Gardeners.
Our first class in Calaveras County will be Saturday, July 7, from 10am – noon at the Calaveras County Senior Center in San Andreas. Our first class in Amador County will be on Saturday, August 18, from 9-11am at the GSA Building in Jackson.
Both of these classes will demonstrate the basic principles of safe water bath canning while teaching how to make jams and jellies. Master Food Preservers will explain why each step of the process is important to ensure that your home preserved foods are not only delicious, but safe. If you learn the why behind each step in the process you’ll know how to properly adjust recipes you may find on the internet and in magazines.
The classes are free and reservations are not needed. Please join us!
