Hospice’s 15th Annual Art on the Lawn Event: A Chance to Help Others and an Evening of Fun!

The terraced and Tuscan-inspired grounds of Karmere Vineyards and Winery is the setting for Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties’ 15th Annual Art on the Lawn event, Friday, June 15. This year, event-goers may count on the best of what this event is known for—the opportunity to help an organization that cares for so many individuals and families throughout Amador and Calaveras Counties each year, and a chance to view and own original works of art by professional, local artisans such as Brad Deveraux, John Johannsen, Katherine Venturelli, Carol Sethre, James Aarons, Rod Hanchett, David Hopman and others. .....

Offering something special for local, budding artists as well, the Hospice High School Art Contest, now in its third year, has again turned up a talented young artist whose winning submission will be framed and available for auction the night of the event. The contest, open to Calaveras and Amador County high schools, asked entrants to consider what palliative care and/or end-of-life might feel or look life from an artistic point of view. The winner, Amador High School senior Mercedes Ross, along with her parents, will be guests of Hospice at Art on the Lawn next Friday, and Mercedes will speak briefly about her work, goals and hopes for the future. Additionally, the winning piece was handed over to local graphic designer Joy Elhard, who then created the promotional poster for the event featuring the winning entry.

Inspired by her relationship with her 92-year old ailing grandmother, who, even facing the end of her life, made Mercedes feel “infinite and triumphant” as she spent time listening to her life stories during their weekly visits last year.

“I could tell she was content with her life. I decided that I would remember my better days with her more than my bad ones. Those are the feelings I want to remember forever, so I put them on paper the best way I could portray them,” said Mercedes, who channeled those feelings into an original pastel drawing, depicting a gathering of people silhouetted against a sunset-hued sky. Hospice team members felt that the submission creatively captured the task while uniquely speaking to Mercedes’ experience with her grandmother and the human spirit.

The venue, donated by Karmere, promises to be a perfect locale for this year’s theme, “An Evening of Aloha”, featuring Polynesian-inspired fare by Bella Cucina Catering, local wines, the soothing sounds of Hawaiian music and a professional hula dance performance, not to mention the main attraction of the night, the live art auction. The event typically attracts about 200 guests, who turn out for both the live and silent auction, a raffle offering an assortment of locally donated goods and services, great food and mingling.
As the non-profit organization’s largest annual fundraiser, Art on the Lawn is possible due to almost every component being donated by local businesses and artists, enabling Hospice to serve the more than 300 or so families who reach out for palliative care each year. Hospice, which has provided end-of-life care to patients and families in Amador and Calaveras Counties for 30 years, extends its services to everyone in need of it, regardless of their financial situation.

Major sponsors of the 15th Annual Art on the Lawn event include Jackson Rancheria, Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, American Legion Post 108, and Karmere Vineyard and Winery. Raffle sponsor is Jackson Tire.

Tickets are $40 per person, and purchase prior to the night of the event is strongly encouraged. Tickets are available at the following locations: Gold Mine Jewelers (Jackson); Karmere Winery (Plymouth); Fine Eye Gallery (Sutter Creek); Jackson and Angels Camp Hospice Thrift Stores; by phone at 209-223-5500; or, at www.hospiceofamador.org.
