Riches from the Fair! Frog Jump Pays Off for Calaveras County!~by Patrick Works

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee for 2012 concluded Sunday with the much anticipated drawing of winners in the annual $10,000 "Pot of Gold" cash giveaway by the Friends of the Fair and the Junior Livestock Boosters. Tickets for the drawing have been sold locally for many months, with quite a rush as the big moment approached. The hillside at Frogtown was packed as the entire county seemed to be assembled for the Demolition Derby. After the first heat was concluded, a happy crowd got one last chance to win....

This year everyone was pleased to have an additional offering of a brand new livestock trailer for a second "grand prize" in the Pot of Gold drawing. With the partnership between the Junior Livestock Boosters and Friends of the Fair, clearly the trailer was a great incentive to contribute to local agriculture and our kids.

The first ticket drawn went to Clay Kruse, and given his choice he enthusiastically accepted the livestock trailer. Most everyone in Calaveras County knows or knows of Clay. He's a graduate of Bret Harte High, currently a member of the rodeo team at Fresno State University, a state officer in FFA, and has been a part of agricultural activities and served this community since he was a quite young.

After his winning ticket was drawn, Clay got on the microphone and told the crowd why he threw his $25 into the "Pot of Gold" drawing: "I just wanted to do my part to help support youth agriculture. I've had so much help and support from this community my whole life, that now it's time for me to do for others what was done for me!"

The second ticket was drawn, and to everyone's great joy, another local pillar of the community, Alice Airola, was the lucky winner of $10,000 cash! The Airola family has been a part of Calaveras County for many generations, has served this community in many capacities, and continues to be a vital part of many things. Alice is particularly known for her long service at Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital. While Alice was not present for the drawing, she did not need to be in order to win. She got a call from the arena and came on down though!

This year's animal auctions raised an incredible $330,000 for our local kids, helping ensure that their hard work and dedication to agriculture and the community can continue. Capital projects underway for the coming year include a state-of-the-art hog barn planned for the fairgrounds among other things. Final figures from the "Pot of Gold" drawing are not in yet, but we'll let you know the tally when Firman Brown and Jeff Johnson finish catching their breath after the fair.

Congratulations to Alice Airola and Clay Kruse, all the kids and their families who brought animals to the fair this year, and thanks from ThePinetree.net for everyone who worked so hard to see that Calaveras County will continue to have a prosperous and friendly fair for many many years to come.
