New Melones Visitor Center, CA...Nature Bowl is a team competition for 3rd – 6th grade students similar to a spelling bee or math mini-bowl. The emphasis is not so much on the competition, but on involving students in a series of fun and challenging activities that reinforce science and environmental concepts focusing on our regional ecology, natural history, and conservation. students are from schools in Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne County. The schools participating this year include: Curtis Creek, Jenny Lind, Mountain Oaks, Pine Grove, Pioneer, Railroad Flat, and West Point. Students will participate in activities such as Nature Jeopardy, Bell-Ringers, Enviro-mercials, and Nature Investigations. The 77 students and 11 teachers have been making the time to coach and prepare for the event for several months. Volunteers have been critical in helping coach and also facilitate activities during the event. Partners include: the CA Department of Fish and Game, which coordinates all the Nature Bowls events; the Bureau of Reclamation which is providing the site for the event as well as staff and volunteers; the Calaveras County Office of Education; the California Regional Environmental Education Community Network (CREEC); Stewardship Through Education LLC; and 15 individuals from the local community. We hope to encourage other teachers in the three foothill counties to participate next year and fill all 18 team slots!
