Holly Orman Named May 2012 Mentor of the Month
Calaveras County, CA...The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is proud to honor Murphys resident Holly Orman as May 2012 Mentor of the Month. “Not only is Holly devoted to her mentee and her mentee’s family, she is equally enthusiastic about recruiting mentors for other children in our community,” said Colleen Dolan, Coordinator of Mentoring Programs at the Calaveras County Office of Education. “Every month Holly volunteers her time arranging for the mentoring program to be represented in parades and local events across the county. She is an integral part of our program’s community outreach effort.” ....
When Holly was first matched with her teenaged mentee, Bronte Wilhelm, she wasn’t sure what they would do together. “Our friendship has taken on a life of its own. We’ve had many adventures together. I’m still surprised by some of the things we’ve done,” said Holly.
Following Bronte’s interest in animals, Holly arranged for them to visit a local chicken farm. That visit expanded into a chicken raising adventure that took Holly and Bronte from baby chick to chicken dinner. “We watched the chicks hatch, and when we finished building our coop, we brought four of them home. Unfortunately, one of them was attacked by a dog. It died in Bronte’s arms and we buried it together. We’ve learned some big life and death lessons,” said Holly.
The Mentoring Program asks all of its matches to do a community service project. Holly and Bronte knew they wanted to work with animals and decided together to foster dogs for the Calaveras Humane Society. “We went through the screening process, and we shared the responsibility of caring for the dogs,” said Holly. “We’ve fostered a total of five dogs. Bronte loves seeing the dogs out in the community after they’ve been adopted by good families.” Bronte fell in love with the last foster dog the two took on. Now Holly and Bronte spend their time taking Leroy, Bronte’s new puppy, to obedience school.
“My most rewarding moments as a mentor have been watching Bronte succeed and take steps toward becoming an independent person,” said Holly. “Recently we were studying together for her driving test. We put in a lot of hours, and it’s pretty boring material, but she aced the test! I feel so happy when something good happens to her. I feel like being a mentor has extended my family. Bronte is my friend. I truly love and care about her. She has become a part of my family.”
In addition to her work with the Mentoring Program, Holly is a founding member of the Mother Lode Jewish Community, a volunteer at the Hospice Thrift Store in Angels Camp, and she works as a pharmacist at Murphys Pharmacy. When asked how she manages to have time to be a mentor, she responded, “Even on a busy week, we meet for an hour here or an hour there. We manage to fit it in. The way I see it, I’m going to go on a walk anyway; now I just get to bring her along.”
“Holly is an invaluable volunteer,” said Kathryn Eustis, Director of Youth Development and Prevention Programs. “We are deeply grateful for her time and dedication to the program.” The mentoring program is always seeking volunteers, and particularly needs mentors right now for boys in Murphys and San Andreas. “There are many ways to support the program,” said Eustis. “Identifying a great mentor, helping with fundraising, and getting the word out to the community all make a difference.”
