Bears of Calaveras Big Trees State Park This Saturday!
Big Trees State Park, CA...This Saturday May 5 Paul Ustach, Biology Professor at San Joaquin Delta College, will present a free program about the Bears of Calaveras Big Trees State and the surrounding Sierra. The program begins at 10 a.m. and will be held in Jack Knight Hall near the Visitor Center. Park entry fees of $8 per vehicle are required but the program is free....
The program is the first in a series of five seminars offered in 2012 to the public by the Calaveras Big Trees Association, the non-profit that funds educational and interpretive programs. This initial seminar will help park visitors understand bear behavior, and what happens when bears and humans meet.
Bears are the largest animals native to the Sierra Nevada, and the one critter most visitors to the state park are curious about. They either want to see one, or they want to avoid one. Understanding how bears live and survive in the wilderness, and where the wilderness interfaces with human residences, will be part of the program.
Several bears live within the 6,000 acres of the park and surrounding areas. Although the public does not see them often, the animals can remain active throughout the year. Black bears, which can range in color from black to cinnamon, can grow as large as 550 pounds, though normally a full grown bear in this region would be about 300 pounds.
Typically bears avoid human contact. Every summer bears are sighted in or near park campgrounds, or on trails, particularly when visitors do not properly secure food and garbage. The park staff works to educate the public on bear behavior, and penalties are possible for those who do not properly secure food.
Dr. Ustach presented a very popular seminar about reptiles and amphibians here at the Park in 2009. He continues with a long college tradition of bringing his students to Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Recently he has been volunteering during the summers in Yosemite.
For questions about this or any other seminar contact the CBTA office at 209-795-3840, check out the website at www.bigtrees.org, or go to Facebook and look for Calaveras Big Trees Association.
