Spend the Day May 12 with Two Artists at Work in Moke Hill
Mokelumne Hill, CA...In the morning of Saturday, May 12th, take a drawing class with Dale Laitinen and in the afternoon, watch a demonstration with artist Doug Lawler. It’s a day of art experiences presented by Petroglyphe Gallery in Mokelumne Hill. First, starting at 10:00 am until 2:30 pm, will be the hands-on drawing class for those who want to develop skills in drawing what they see. Instructor Laitinen, of Mountain Ranch, with 40 years of experience, says that drawing is not a mysterious talent by those flawless few; it is a skill anyone can learn. All levels of artists may participate. Cost is $70, with advance registration required through ....

Another equally talented artist, Doug Lawler, who resides in both Oakland and Mountain Ranch, will give a free demonstration of his techniques from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Lawler’s copper plate etching prints have been on display at Petroglyphe Gallery since the gallery opened last July, with “Big Dog” and “Gravity” being the most popular. Lawler finds copperplates to be the perfect medium for displaying intricate and complex detail. His prints begin with a copper plate, the surface of which is scratched then covered in ink that finds its way into the lines on the plate. To complete the image, he uses brushes and other tools to create other dimensions. The plate is finally run through the etching press making each print unique. Lawler started his career with oil painting in the late 1950s in his hometown of Detroit. He then spent time in San Francisco, Hawaii and Spain, where his work became know in many galleries. This past March, one of his posters was included as part of an exhibit at the Oakland Museum, “All of Us or None: Social Justice Posters of the San Francisco Bay Area”.
The spacious, artsy feeling of Petroglyphe Gallery is an ideal venue in which to learn from these two highly skilled and renowned artists. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served during the afternoon demo.
Petroglyphe Gallery, home to 29 exhibiting artists and 17 jewelry artists, is located at 8317 Main Street, Mokelumne Hill. Near the intersection of Highway 49 and 26 turn onto Main Street.
