Physicians for Social Responsibility Sacramento Chapter

Sacramento CA....The Sacramento Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility is pleased to announce the finalists in its 2012 High School Scholarship Essay Contest. The prompt for this year's contest is a statement by the early 20th Century Supreme Court Justice, Louis Brandeis, who said, "We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both."...

The finalists in this year's contest were selected through a rigorous screening process from among 108 entries from high school seniors in Sacramento and surrounding counties. The finalists in this year's contest are:

Kyle Cerniglia
Golden Sierra High School, Garden Valley

Tiffany Chan
C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento

Dylan Fitzwater
Nevada Union High School, Grass Valley

Sara Harris
Charter Community HSA III, Placerville

Belinda Li
Mira Loma High School, Sacramento

Elissa Niccum
Mira Loma High School, Sacramento

Richard Pham
Florin High School, Sacramento

Naveena Sunkara
Vista Del Lago High School, Elk Grove

Lark Trumbly
C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento

Moosa Zaidi
Granite Bay High School, Granite Bay

The student finalists will present their essays orally at the PSR/Sacramento Scholarship Essay Contest Dinner on Sunday, April 29. After the students present their essays, a distinguished panel of judges from the community, including former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso, will ask them questions about their essays and choose the first, second, and third place winners. The first place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship, second place a $2,500 scholarship, and third place a $2,000 scholarship. The other finalists will each receive $1,000 scholarships.

The Finals Dinner is open to the public and is being held at the Dante Club, 2330 Fair Oaks Boulevard, in Sacramento. Doors will open at 5:30 pm, dinner will be served at 6:00 pm, and the presentations of the finalists will begin at 7:00 pm. The cost of the dinner is $30 per person ($15 for students). Reservations for the scholarship finals dinner are required and may be made online via the PSR/Sacramento website. The deadline for making reservations is midnight on Tuesday, April 24.

PSR/Sacramento President Dr. Harry Wang notes, "The Brandeis quotation, even though it was uttered almost a century ago, is an extremely timely one, and the students' essays are thought provoking and inspiring." This is the eighth consecutive year that PSR/Sacramento has offered the high school scholarship essay contest. A different quotation has been used as the prompt every year. More details about this year's contest and the essays of past contest winners are available on the PSR/Sacramento website at www.sacpsr.org.
