Large Boom Heard Throughout Mother Lode and Central Sierra Region. (Updated..Probable Meteor Related))
Calaveras & Tuolumne...We heard as many of you did a large boom about 10 minutes ago. It was heard throughout the both counties. Just checked in with TCU Dispatch and they do not have an origin as of yet. They said it could have been a sonic boom. (Update as of 8:14am...The Calaveras Sheriff's Department just passed along that CHP Dispatch has reports of a low flying plane in the area. So it appears it was a sonic boom. As a young boy I grew up in the flight pattern of an Air Force base and was rather fond of the sonic booms until they were banned... (Update as of 8:23am...We just spoke with the Powell family that lives in Arnold and they were on their deck and saw what they are describing as a meteorite low over the area well before they heard the boom. So from the Powell's perspective it was not a plane. More to follow... (Update as of 10:01am...there was a meteor shower last night...so wouldn't it be great if we actually had an impact in our area? As long is it was a safe impact. We should have had comments enabled earlier on this post but below are some that have been sent in...(Update as of 10:14am...We just spoke with Mary Jo from Calfire TCU and they have had numerous "Smoke Checks" this morning and they have all been confirmed as debris burns... (Update as of 10:22am....Just checked in with the busy Calaveras Sheriff's Dispatch center and they confirmed that the California OES has issued a statement that part of a comet did enter the atmosphere above our area and caused the boom. As of yet there has not been a confirmed impact point!!

At about 7:53, while our family was sitting on our deck. We saw a, seemingly, low flying meteorite. It was the lowest I have ever seen. We live in Arnold. Minutes later, we heard a sonic boom.
The Powell's

John – In the last 5 minutes there was an enormous boom that shook the house here in BLS. Really loud. When I rushed outside, the sound was still reverberating in 360 degrees. As it subsided, the sound seemed to finally end in the direction of Avery.
Far too loud for any kind of gunfire, while too low to be a sonic boom. More like dynamite.
So, FYI.

The loud “boom” this a.m. shook our house and woke up both teenage kids, (which, if you have teenagers, is hard to do !!) We couldn’t figure out what could have caused the “boom” and were speculating everything an explosion or plane crash (no smoke) or a large tree falling. Thanks for your prompt posting of a probable sonic boom. We can all stop scratching our heads. The Powell’s description of a meteorite is very interesting --- I’m now curious what the “official” explanation will be.
Thanks for being so prompt with your post – what would we do without you !!

I was in the yard in Hathaway Pines. The sound travelled NNW based on echoes from the hills. Most likely a Lyrids comet. I grew up on the coast near large Naval bases where sonic booms were normal, this was not a jet. Time to check NASA/Norad for tracking, fragments are worth more than gold.

I saw the meteor this morning as well about twenty minutes before the loud explosion sound that shook our house. It was the biggest fireball I’ve ever seen. Pretty amazing to see.

the meteorite shower passed by around midnight. It was far gone by 7:53am. That's how showers work, they pass by as a group.

Well no, that's not how meteor "showers" work. There are more Lyrids expected tonight, and you can be sure that Earth has been passing through these fragments all night and today.

and the earth turns, exposing the OTHER side of the Earth at a different hour. Meteors cannot hit us if they're coming in from the opposite side of the universe. duh.

OP said the shower was over at 7:53, implying that the boom could not have been a meteor (at least not one from the Lyrids). But Lyra (the radiant for this event) was still plenty high in the sky at 7:53. Calaveras County was still exposed to it. My money is on a meteor.

I heard one large boom while in my garden on Old Gulch Rd,then a long series of rumblings. The effects were palpable,I thought it was the usual blasting at All Rock quarry, then it kept rumbling, like a series of detonations, being it was Sunday, they never blast on Sunday,I then thought meteoroid.

I heard the same. Series of small rumblings after the big blast that continued for several minutes after.

Shook the house severely here 'tween Mountain Ranch and Railroad Flat.
Went outside because I thought the horse had kicked the wall... heard a good dozen echos of the boom. Looked up and saw a VERY short contrail dissipating.
Certainly wasn't a LOW flying jet

Boom!

I don't think it was a meteorite or a sonic boom. We had a tree fall next door last year, it reminded me of that-woke up the whole family and felt like an earthquake. But a Facebook friend who lives near Tahoe heard it too. So it couldn't have been a tree! Time to call the government & see what they have to say... IF they will share what they know.

Awesome, a new conspiracy theory.
A basketball sized rock traveling at a couple of thousand miles an hour would probably travel a hundred miles or so before it broke up, hence the great distance over which it was heard.
But lets not let science get in the way of a new conspiracy.

I'm not saying the government had anything to do with it, but you are kidding yourself of you think they share everything they know with the population at large. Especially if they think the more ignorant amongst us may panic en masse.
But you go ahead and label me a conspiracy theorist if it makes you feel better.

I am here in Sparks, Nevada. Hubby and I heard loud BOOM at about 8:01 am. I had been out viewing the Lyrid Meteor Shower at 4:30 am. I believe it was a meteor entering the atmosphere and/or hitting Earth. / Lots of reports here in Reno-Sparks.

We in the Meadowmont area in Arnold have heard explosions, large and small, before. I started recording them - Sept. 24, 2011 at 7:40pm and again at 8:10, Dec. 30, 2011at 10.28pm and Dec. 31, 2011 at 5:13pm and 6:45pm Thought this was another one, but apparently not. Comet makes sense.

Shaking and big boom

We were in our cabin on Ben Thorn in Camp Connell at the kitchen table this morning when we felt shaking (3.0 ish on the richter scale?). We thought the shaking was due to a large tree falling near our property because it felt like a mild earthquake. Went out an investigated around the property and didn't see a large tree on the ground so thought perhaps there was some blasting going on in the area.
