The High Country Hellcats 2011 Home Bout Season ended on a very powerful and promising note, with a smashing score of 248 Hellcats to 65 Ressurection's CinderRollas, of Rohnert Park. Through their entire nine game season the Hellcats suffered only 2 losses with 7 wins. This year the Hellcats will have 5 home , and 3 away games, or "bouts" as they are called in Roller Derby. All but one of these home bouts will be double or triple headers, including games featuring Mountain Derby Girls newest teams the Gold Diggers and The Junior Hellcats. The Junior Hellcats are made up of girls ranging in ages from 10 - 17 and are coached by Diana Boyd, aka Sheeda Bomb, of the Hellcats. The Gold Diggers are the Mountain Derby Girls C Team, which have emerged from an abundance of women interested in becoming derby girls at the High Country Sports Arena. Twice annually adult recruitment is open to the public for women 18 yrs and older. Juniors must be between 10 and 17 years of age and have open recruitment year round. The new group from each recruitment of adults is nicknamed "The Strays", other leagues may call them "fresh meat." They begin rigorous training - learning to skate, fall, hit, and use strategy , like their aforementioned Hellcats and Gold Diggers - under the watchful eye of Maria Hines aka Coach Quad Queen. This is no simple feat, and over the course of months, many fall by the wayside. But the few that remain are dedicated and strong and will one day place on a team roster. The latest group of strays come from as far away as Arnold or La Grange to practice three times a week, alongside the Hellcats and Gold Diggers. Most have young children, and careers. There are several in the restaurant business, there is a medical transciptionist and massage therapist, as well as a hair stylist; all with this new found interest: Roller Derby. When asked why they joined, answers came such as,. " I wanted to join because i wanted to be apart of a team of fun loving crazy women from all walks of life who, like me, want to escape the stresses of everyday routine by putting on some skates and getting a killer workout. Plus you get to pick out a cool "alter-ego" name and wear some crazy costumes!! I like the retro aspect of it and the fact that everyone in my life is excited too, through me, having an awesome new sport to watch and be apart of!!" - Renee Noris.
Rose Wells says " When I was young I loved to skate. I always struggled with exercising in a gym or at home. I looked up roller derby and became really excited; not only would it be great exercise, but it would be a challenge. So I began and am so happy with the self assurance, personal goals accomplished and the new rad chicks I've met.". and further Kelly Darby adds, " I am a stay at home mom who joined derby to find out who I am other than being a mom and a wife. I wanted to make friends and get some exercise. Feeling confident and sexy are just two of the many perks of being a derby girl !"
The next recruitment period for adults will be May 21-June 3 , 2012. Winter practice hours for Adults are Tues and Thurs. 7 pm - 930 pm, and Sunday 10 am - Noon, Junior practice is from 5:30 to 7:00 pm Tuesdays, and Thursdays at the HIgh Country Sports Arena. Monthly Dues are $30 a month for adults, and $15 for Juniors, and include use of rental derby gear (, skates , pads, and helmet,) for the initial trial month. The Mountain Derby Girls are one of the many programs offered at High Country Sports Arena, a non-profit 503(c) organization. The arena also offers Roller Hockey ( all ages), Figure Skating, Indoor Soccer, Family and Teen Skate Nights, Party Packages, and can be rented out for other events.
