In Focus 25: Award Winning Photography in the Motherlode. ~By Patrick Works
Sonora, CA...The Central Sierra Arts Council hosted half the Motherlode at their gallery in Historic Downtown Sonora last night, as the 25th annual In Focus awards were presented. From traditional techniques utilizing film and darkroom tools, to the latest in digital and alternative processes, artistic visions of all kinds were on display as hundreds came through the gallery to enjoy the night. The Best of Show award went to Allison Fairfield for her work "Dust to Dust", the Charles Moore Award went to Matthew Gass for his piece "Crowded Train Platform"...

Mr Gass had quite a night, as he also was awarded first place in the color category for the same entry. First place in the monochrome category went to Rick Emery for his "True Love". First place in the alternative category went to Mark Wilburn for "Mother Nature", with further winners including Cord Rawlinson, Daniel Ryan, Susan Conner, Lorraine Nilson, and Laura Faye Mah also awarded cash prizes for placing in the top 3 of each category.
Judging the entries for In Focus this year were Mark Citret; a photographer and photography instructor at the UC Extension, Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Ansel Adams Gallery, Janet Delaney; NEA award winning photographer and instructor who's work is included in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art among others, and Kim Komenich; former staff photographer for the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner, currently teaching at San Jose State University.
There were over 125 entries, so the judges had their hands full. After coming to their choices for the four category winners, each judge picked a personal award winner: Mark Citret chose Davild Lindquist's "Foundry Windows", Janet Delaney picked Rochelle Villanueva's "Come Hither Pitcher Plant", and Kim Komenich selected Thalisha Kamice's "Autumn".
The In Focus exhibit remains up at the Central Sierra Arts Council Gallery through February 28th. Today at 11AM there will be a guided walk through the entire exhibit. If you are interested in attending this morning, or any time through the end of the month, you will find the gallery at 193 South Washington St. in Historic Downtown Sonora.
Please don't miss this. It's an amazing show.
