Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Launches its Hospitalist Program

SAN ANDREAS, CA – January 9, 2012– Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital (MTSJH) launched its hospitalist program announced Interim Hospital President Patti Monczewski, calling it an asset to patients and their physicians.

“As interim president, two of my priorities are improving the patient experience in the emergency room and attracting quality physicians to the Hospital and Family Medical Centers,” states Monczewski. “The hospitalist program supports both these objectives. It provides excellent healthcare for all, allowing physicians to be accessible to patients in their practice with confidence that their hospitalized patients are in good hands.”...

“In their roles as the “hubs” of inpatient clinical care, hospitalists are readily available to see hospitalized patients,” explains Sean Anderson, M.D., MTSJH Vice President of Medical Affairs. “When necessary, they may see patients several times a day. Not only will this help patients move from the emergency room to be admitted more quickly for treatment, patients also benefit from coordinated, timely, and efficient care.”

Physicians and their patients benefit from the hospitalist program during all three phases of care. Private practice physicians and Family Medical Center physicians can work with hospitalists to directly admit patients, thereby avoiding the emergency room. Hospitalists will care for patients throughout their hospital stay. This continuity of care will support the patient following release from the hospital since the hospitalist will prepare the discharge summary and help prepare the patient’s regular physician for the follow-up care.

“While the hospitalist program is new to Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, the hospitalists themselves are already known to the community,” noted Dr. Anderson. “Our first hospitalist is none other than Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County’s Health Medical Officer who also practices family medicine with Silver Oak Medical Office.” Dr. Kelaita has been on active staff at Mark Twain for 15 years. Originally from Anaheim, California, he attended Medical School at Albany Medical College Albany, New York, graduating in1992. He completed his Internship and Residency at University of California San Francisco Medical Center.
