Ron Patel Named 2011 Citizen of the Year
Tuolumne County, CA...Ron Patel, General Manager of Black Oak Casino, has been named the 2011 Tuolumne County Chamber Citizen of the Year. Each year, the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce presents its “Best of Tuolumne County Awards.” This year’s awards ceremony will take place on November 18th at the annual Installation and Honors Banquet at the Sonora Elk’s Lodge....
In addition to serving as Black Oak Casino’s General Manager, Ron also heads up the Casino’s Sponsorship and Donation Committee. The Casino and Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians contribute support annually to community non-profits, athletics, education, and community service organizations.
Ron also provides leadership to many community organizations including serving as Co-Chairman, along with Julie VonSavoye, of the annual benefit for Meals on Wheels. He has also served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, Sierra Repertory Theater, Stage 3 and Sierra Senior Services. In addition, he volunteers his time for other community events including private fundraisers and Habitat for Humanity. Black Oak Casino is proud of Ron's involvement in making Tuolumne County a better place to live.
Ron Patel has held the position of General Manager of the Black Oak Casino since 2001. The Casino is owned and operated by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, and Ron successfully guided the tribe and the Casino through their Phase I and Phase II openings. Growing from a 1-level 22,500 square foot facility in 2001, to a 3-level 167,000 square foot facility in 2005, Black Oak Casino is the only casino in California to offer not only Class III gaming but a complete non-gaming family entertainment floor.
Over the course of his 38 years in Gaming, Ron has worked in Commercial, Charitable and Indian Gaming. His career has taken him throughout Britain, Canada, and both the East and West coasts of the U.S. For the last 20 years Ron has worked for various Indian Tribes in a consultancy or senior management position, most notably in New York, Washington, Arizona and California.
Ron has been married to his wife Anne for 37 years, and they have a 31-year-old son and a 27-year-old daughter who both live in Albuquerque, N.M. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Ron and his family left England in 1989 for Canada and then moved to New York in the early 1990s to work for the Oneida Indian Nation of New York prior to the opening of their Turning Stone Casino.
