Arrest Made in Stolen Vehicle and Identity Theft. Mail Stolen from 24 Address Near Racetrack Road

Angels Camp, CA..On October 30th, 2011, at approximately 7:48am, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department was dispatched to a report of a reckless drive traveling north on Hwy 49 near Carson Hill. An off-duty Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputy that was on his way to work was passed by the reckless driver and he reported the information to dispatch....

The off-duty deputy followed the suspect vehicle to the parking lot of the visitor's center, located at 1192 S. Main Street in Angels Camp, where the Angels Camp officer met him.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect vehicle was stolen in the early morning hours, from an address in Tuolumne County. In addition to possessing the stolen vehicle, the driver had over one-hundred pieces of U.S. Mail that was apparently taken from various addresses in Tuolumne County. Twenty-four different addresses, all in Tuolumne County, were identified as locations where mail was stolen.

The owner of the stolen vehicle responded to Angels Camp and recovered his vehicle. A list of victim addresses related to the mail has been forwarded to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office, for follow-up with those victims.

A map of the general area where the majority of the thefts occurred is attached. The Angels Camp Police Department is still trying to identify the owner of a television set that was recovered from the stolen vehicle and is believed to have been stolen. If you are missing a television, please contact the Angels Camp Police Department with a description.

Michael Kenneth Mac Kern, a 19 year old transient Tuolumne County resident, was arrested and booked on numerous charges related to the possession of stolen property, identity theft, vehicle theft, reckless driving, driving without a license, and vehicle tampering. An additional charge related to committing new offenses while out on bail was also added, due to at least one pending court case in Tuolumne County that Kern is facing, which is related to a burglary and the possession of stolen property. That court date is scheduled for November 9th, 2011.
