Pat Kaunert Joins Fire Safe Council

(Sonora, CA January 28, 2011)…Highway 108 Fire Safe Council (FSC) President Jerry Tannhauser today announced the appointment of Sonora resident Pat Kaunert to the Council’s board of directors. Kaunert recently retired from the U.S. Forest Service, and had served for five years as the agency’s liaison to the Fire Safe Council for strategic communication, public outreach, and fire prevention information-education programs...

Council President Tannhauser stated, “We are very pleased that Pat is joining the Fire Safe Council as one of our directors. His communication liaison work with the Council has been outstanding, and his 35-year career with the Forest Service in Fire Prevention and Public Affairs will add important expertise and skills to our group. We have an excellent and dedicated team of community volunteers on the board, and Pat will fit right in with his communication expertise.” Kaunert served for 23 years as Deputy Public Affairs Officer for the Stanislaus National Forest, and will now serve on the FSC team as one of its current nine directors.

The Highway 108 Fire Safe Council serves as a strategic planning and communication link with local, state, and federal wildland fire agencies The FSC engages local communities and fire agencies in discussions about fire protection, emergency preparedness, and fire prevention measures needed to protect life, property, and resources from wildland fires. FSC public meetings provide private landowners and local fire agency officials the opportunity to network, discuss, and develop projects to support and strengthen wildland fire defense systems. The goal is to connect and enhance the effectiveness of fire protection, emergency access routes, defensible space around homes, and implement fire prevention measures to support agency firefighting efforts.

FSC Public meetings and programs provide updates on current fuel reduction projects, California Public Resources Code 4291 requirements to ensure a 100-foot defensible space around homes and structures, and local community projects designed to reduce flammable fuels in the area. The FSC seeks ideas and comments from residents of Tuolumne County to help fire agencies better identify the existing wildland fire danger present on public lands administered by the Forest Service (FS), and adjacent private property located within the county and state responsibility area protected by the Tuolumne County Fire Department, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), and direct protection area of the USDA Forest Service.

The Highway 108 FireSafe Council works closely with the Tuolumne County Fire Department, CAL FIRE, USDA Forest Service, USDI Bureau of Land Management, Columbia Fire Protection District, Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Fire Department, Tuolumne City Fire Protection District, Sonora City Fire Department, local fire districts, and local communities to develop and implement strategic community wildfire protection plans.
