Columbia City Hotel Celebrates Grand Opening on Saturday~by Patrick Works

Columbia State Historic Park, CA.....Chef Jeff Briggs, along with his wife Jackie, hosted the grand opening of the City Hotel and restaurant yesterday in the Columbia State Historic Park. Last nights dinner was sold out weeks ago, but reservations are available for the weeks ahead, as the Briggs family adds operation of this beautiful and historic venue to the long list of other concessions they've handled in Columbia....

Chef Briggs started his career as a student of the culinary program at Columbia College; he's a real success story for that program. The Grand Opening of the City Hotel Restaurant under the Briggs family's proprietorship is the culmination of a long tenure there by Chef Briggs that saw him begin as a dishwasher and move up the ranks to his present role. Leading a staff of 3 in the kitchen, 4 in the dining room, 3 more at the front desk, staff in the adjacent What Cheer Saloon, not to mention the operation already under way at the Fallon Hotel and the seasonal ice cream concession therein, Jeff and Jackie Briggs have a lot on their plate.

Guests from around the world arrived all day, and the phone never stopped ringing as day unfolded. Among the guests arriving was Mark Twain himself, who came to participate in the ribbon cutting as the doors opened under the Briggs Family's management for the first time.

Never one to miss an opportunity for a nice meal and a chance to talk about himself, Mr. Twain was enthusiastic about the future for the City Hotel, and even more enthusiastic about the future of his own literary career. On the subject of the recent success of his long awaited autobiography, Mr. Twain gave the following shorthand review of his own work.

"It's largely made of half-truths, shirking-truths, nearly no absolute truths, and will certainly arise from it's present humble position down the page a bit to the number one position on the New York Times Best Seller List. Primarily it's constituted by what are known as 'stretchers' which can be distinguished from outright lies by the time honored 'cat test'; Outright lies are like cats, in that they've only got nine lives, while a good 'stretcher' has considerably more."

Mr. Twain is a large part of the dinner theater performances that the Briggs family has planned for the City Hotel. With lodging, meals, drinks at the saloon, and the tickets for the performance coming in at only $275 for a couple, it's no wonder the phone was ringing off the hook. Rumor has it that Bret Harte himself will join the cast during the Easter season.
