"History of the Chinese in Calaveras County" Presented by Julia Costello tonight.
San Andreas, CA..Join the San Andreas Library on Thursday, April 26, 2007 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an informative event...In the 1870's, one out of every 7 people in Calaveras County was Chinese. Primarily working abandoned placer claims, they extracted gold to support families back home in Kwangtung Province. Chinese merchants, shopkeepers, and tradesmen set up businesses in sections of Mother Lode towns (Chinatowns) where miners....
could find supplies and traditional comforts when they were not working. California was called Gum San or Golden Mountain and provided extraordinary opportunities for making money for those who could brave living among "barbarians" in a distant land.
The story of California's Chinese has been studied by local archaeologist, Julia Costello, who will present a summary of their interesting history using slides of artifacts and historic images.
