SO Clarifies Reduction of Response to Calls ~By, Charity Maness
As Sheriff, the chief law enforcement officer of the County, it is the sole responsibility to preserve the peace and prevent crime. In doing so he is expected to enforce orders put in place by a higher authority...a court of law. This includes responding to a violation of a child custody order
Sgt. Eberhardt reassures the community that the ‘new’ idea of streamlining the department by operating an Online Reporting system will not have an adverse effect upon the response to any crime in progress. He reiterated, “if there is a subject involved or evidence…we will get involved” encouraging citizens, when in doubt, to contact dispatch.
Desk officer reporting systems, online report filings, are not by any means new to the law enforcement field. Incorporated into many departments, large and small, the system has proven to reduce cost and increase man hours on patrol instead of behind a desk filling out reports that can, with ease, be filled out by the citizen online. Non-emergency calls is where a large amount of a Deputies time can be consumed; through online reporting the amount of time can be reduced drastically.
As reported by Captain Jim Macedo through a press release on December 2, 2010, this system is to be viewed as a customer service tool. Those without internet are still able to call dispatch for response to emergency situations; a crime in progress, and have the option of individually filing counter reports.
