Betsey Metzger, May 28, 1922 - October 15, 2010
San Andreas, CA...San Andreas resident Betsey Metzger died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas. She was 88. Mrs. Metzger was born May 28, 1922, in San Francisco to Ralph and Rachel Hoffman. In 1925, her family moved to Potrerillos, Chile, where her father was a copper mining engineer. After young Betsey Hoffman graduated eighth grade in Chile, her parents sent her to live with relatives to continue her education. She attended University High School in Oakland, and then the University of California, Berkeley, where she joined Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and studied international relations...
Mrs. Metzger met her husband, Grant William Metzger, in Morenci, Ariz., in 1940, and they were married in Los Angeles in 1942. When Mr. Metzger was overseas serving as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mrs. Metzger finished her degree at Berkeley. She and Grant had three sons: Grant Jr. “Randy,” born in 1945, Theodore “Ted,” born in 1948, and Richard “Miles,” born in 1950.
The family lived in Nevada City, where Mr. Metzger worked for a gold mine and then moved to Mokelumne Hill when he was hired as an engineer for the Calaveras Cement Plant. When he became the plant manager, they lived in the “company house” on St. Charles Street in San Andreas from 1955 to 1959. Upon Mr. Metzger’s promotion as company vice president in 1959, the family moved to Menlo Park and lived there until 1972.
The couple moved back to San Andreas, where they built their retirement home in 1975 on 10 acres. The couple enjoyed many years together there gardening, traveling, entertaining and staying involved with family and community.
While in Menlo Park, Mrs. Metzger worked with the Community Committee of International Students, which helped foreign students get settled in America. She was a charter member of the Calaveras Branch of the American Association of University Women. She was instrumental in founding the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in San Andreas. For many years she organized the ongoing bridge tournament there. She also participated in a bridge club of local friends that has met monthly for more than 50 years.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Metzger stayed in touch with many relatives and friends. She was a gracious hostess who entertained regularly. She was a wonderful conversationalist and will be remembered for making all who knew her feel at home.
She is survived by her brother Ralph (Florence) Hoffman of Annandale, Va.; sons Randy (Susan) Metzger of San Andreas, Ted Metzger of Lodi (Joy Metzger of Fremont), Miles Metzger of Mokelumne Hill (Jennifer Metzger Main of San Andreas) (Angelica Guimaraes of St. Helena); grandchildren Grace (David) Verhey, Abraham Metzger, Joel Metzger, Juliana Metzger, Timothy McNulty, Uleaf (Sarabeth) Metzger, Cyrus (Jennifer) Metzger, Gabriella Metzger, Giovanna Metzger; and great-grandchildren Rachel, Anna Jane, Ella, Chantz, Anika and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Rachel Hoffman; and brother David Hoffman of Eugene, Ore.
There will be a private service for her internment. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 520, 414 Oak St, San Andreas, CA 95249.
