Colorado Man Arrested in Angels Camp for Lewd Acts with a Minor

Angels Camp, CA....On 10-04-10, at approximately 8:30 PM, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department was dispatched to the Wyndham Resorts in the Greenhorn Creek area. The initial call was for a disturbance involving an employee and a possible trespasser at the resort. The suspect, John Randall Carney, a 30 year-old Thornton, CO resident, was initially brought to the attention of resort staff by the parents of a 13 year-old female. The parents of the juvenile ....

.noticed that an older white male was taking interest in their daughter, and they brought this to the attention of the resort staff. Resort staff spoke with the male and determined that he was not a registered guest, and when they asked him to leave the premises an argument ensued and the police were notified. Carney left the area prior to the arrival of police.

Further investigation revealed that Carney has been involved in an intimate relationship with the juvenile victim for several months. Carney met the juvenile female in an on-line “chat room,” geared toward teenage users. Carney initially posed as a 15 year-old male in the “chat room,” in an apparent effort to meet a young girl.

A cellular telephone number was obtained for Carney from the victim, and police telephoned Carney and arranged to meet with him. A subsequent interview led to his arrest and booking on charges related to lewd acts with a minor under the age of 14, and possession of obscene media. During an inventory of Carney’s vehicle handcuffs, a lap top computer, and a digital camera were recovered.

This case is still under investigation, and no additional information can be released at this time. The Angels Camp Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s activity on the internet, in “chat rooms,” and while using cellular telephones.
