The iPads Have Landed in Avery ~By John Hamilton
Avery, CA...Last Thursday night the Avery Middle School Library was filled with parents, students and technology fans attending a presentation on the new iPad program for 6-8th graders at Avery. The Vallecito School district is stepping out to the cutting edge for technology in the classroom and for their students. While there will no doubt be some naysayers as to the cost it may actually provide cost savings over the long run. The plan is to start pushing course materials to the devices and save on textbooks. This can provide some very real cost savings..
One of Calaveras County's Tech Gurus Jeff Hughes admires his son's new iPad. Now remember Jeff the iPad is for his School Work :) More photos above..
a typical student can have close to $500 dollars worth of books that can be lost, stolen or damaged over the course of the years.
Yes an iPad can be stolen or lost as well but they can also be remotely disabled so if they come back up on the internet at a different location they can be rendered useless and also tracked.
The best thing about them is that any coursework can be constantly changed and upgraded. This will allow educational materials to be kept current and replaces with the drop of a file into a folder.
They can also teach in ways a textbook never could. Video, Slide Shows and on and on...
At the presentation Vallecito Technology Director Michael Wells did his best Steve Jobs and wowed the crowed with his mastery of the devices. Our hats off to the Vallecito School District for investing in technology even in lean economic times.
This will make our local students more competitive in the high tech job market of tomorrow and enhance our area as being seen as cutting edge even tho we life in the mountains..
