Black Oak Casino and Tuolumne Band of Me Wuk receive Award from Vietnam Veterans California State Council
The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) California State Council awarded the Black Oak Casino and Tuolumne Band of Me Wuk Indians, both of Tuolumne, CA, the coveted 2010 Business Supporter of the Year Award. According to Robert Johnston who presented the award, “It is a great honor to present this award to a business which has done so much for our organization.” VVA Chapter 391 made the presentation on July 28 at Noon at Black Oak Casino on opening day of their Young At Heart campaign by Cher Brandt, president of VVA Chapter 391 of Sonora, CA....
The two organizations were nominated by VVA Chapter 391 in Sonora, CA. “There has not been a fund-raiser that when asked or a donation that they have not given generously and that includes several fund-raisers each year and sometimes they weren’t even asked,” said the nomination letter from Brandt who received the award on behalf of the Casino and Band in Fresno June 27. “The backbone to any chapter’s community support is its contributors,” the letter continued.
Brandt also pointed out that the Casino does a lot more for veterans including having special nights for veterans, relies on VVA Chapter 391’s Color Guard on Veteran’s Day, and they also participate in several fund-raisers such as the chapter’s Annual Golf Tournament.
The chapter is the largest of the VVA chapters in California and they have been awarded Chapter of the Year for two consecutive Biennial State Council conventions. Out of 650 chapters in the nation, they are #6. Last year, the chapter raised over $130,000 and supported the community with $128,000 with donations, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, and scholarships to over 10 deserving graduating seniors at local high schools. “Black Oak Casino and the Tuolumne Band of Me Wuk Indians help make each of our events successful,” says Brandt.
