In Loving Memory of Craig Alan Smith June 12, 1957~June 23, 2010

Craig Alan Smith was born June 12, 1957 in Stockton, California and died of Pulmonary Thromboembolus on June 23, 2010 in the loving and courageous arms of his wife, Laura. He is survived by: his wife, their children, Jennifer and Chad; his mother and father, Barbara and Edwin Smith of Stockton; his brother Stephan Smith and his wife Michelle of Sacramento; his sister Denise Smith and her husband Bob and daughters Lindsey and Riley of Stockton; his brother-in-law Eric Stocking and his wife Marilyn of Fresno; his sister-in-law Patricia and nephews Ben and Nick Rishwain of Stockton and his brother-in-law Craig Stocking of Stockton. He is soulfully missed by his beloved dog Katie and his horses Klondike and Kodiak.....

Craig was a truly driven and powerful man, a carpenter by trade. He began his apprenticeship at the age of 18, his career at the age of 20 and his retirement just shy of 50. During his life he built up a mighty collection of equipment and was legendary for showing up at the right time with the right tool. Thus he earned the nickname MacGyver, for if ever there was a problem, Craig could figure it out.

Having the patience of Job, Craig reserved his dreams for retirement and began to live them, most notably through the Highway 50 Association’s Wagon Train. Of this year’s trip he wrote, over “freshly brewed coffee as the morning sun replaced the shadows and its warmth filled the meadow…there was certainly more heard and understood than words spoken…I am truly honored to know and be embraced as a member of this group…It seems to me…we should all strive to put our best foot forward and never lose the respect that the Highway 50 Association has earned over the years.”

Craig’s love for his family and friends ran deep; indeed the line drawn between them was faint. It didn’t matter what time of day or night, when someone called on him, he answered with honesty, kindness and optimism. This love and dedication he gave to the earth as well, spending the majority of his life outdoors in connection with the Great Spirit.

Craig is known best for his generosity, wit, cleverness, skill, work ethic and love of pranks. His smile and laughter, so full of light, could ignite joyfulness in anyone in any situation. It is such a magnificent experience to witness how brightly this light continues to shine in those who offer their love and support.

A celebration of Craig’s life and accomplishments will be held, date and location to be announced. If one wishes to contribute in any way, especially by sharing stories and pictures that reflect Craig’s humor, selflessness and intelligence, please mail to the Smith Family at P.O. Box 24, Wallace, CA 95254. On behalf of my dad, I’d like to close with his words, “my transformation from ‘Grizzly Bear’ back…[has happened].”
