Prescribed Burn Notification: Jenkins Underburn, Groveland Ranger District, June 28, 2010
The Groveland Ranger District will conduct the Jenkins Underburn project on, or about Monday, June 28, 2010, depending on weather conditions, fuel moisture, and air quality. A total of 13 acres is to be treated with low to moderate intensity fire. The project is located approximately 9 miles southeast of the community of Greeley Hill, along Forest Road 2S05. The project is designed to reduce the invasion of noxious weeds, and to improve forest protection by reducing flammable underbrush....
Individual ignition days may vary, depending on conditions, and the burn project is expected to span one or two days. Smoke should be visible from Smith Station Road and Highway 120, with some down canyon drift smoke visible in the evening and early morning. All burning is monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines, and close coordination with local county air quality control districts.
The overall purpose of the Jenkins Underburn project is to reduce the invasion of noxious weeds, to restore native vegetation, and to restore the historic, fire resistant, conditions for resource protection. This project is a broadcast underburn with specific beneficial objectives designed to:
* Reduce invasive noxious weeds.
* Reduce flammable fuels.
Prescribed burning is an effective, cost efficient method of reducing the invasion of noxious weeds, the buildup of flammable forest fuels, improving firefighting capabilities, and reducing the impacts of large, uncontrolled damaging wildland fires.
Prescribed fires help to enhance wildlife habitat, protect and maintain water quality and soil productivity, improve forest ecosystem health, and reduce the threat of uncontrolled wildfires. The Sierra Nevada is a fire dependent ecosystem, where fire is part of the natural forest process.
