"I did not know Gavin. However, i will never be able to forget his name. I was here, in Afghanistan, when Gavin started his last journey home. I wish his family to know that as we few hundred stood on that flightline for a memorial to honor his great sacrifice that his actions will not be in vane and will never be forgotten! I will never be able to forget those moments, the image of a young man i never met, who gave something that most in our great land will never, ever be able to comprehend. May god be with his family and his wife. Rest assured that his memory will live on!" Comment On Article....Author Unknown

The team leader of his unit, Brummund was on patrol in Marjah, Afghanistan on his second tour of duty when struck by an I.E.D. (Improvised Explosive Device). Although promptly treated and airlifted from the blast site, he succumbed to his injuries at the field hospital. Lance Corporal, Brummund will be awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Award for his bravery, one of the highest honors awarded to a Marine.

Brummund was born February 25, 1988 in Van Nuys and was an 18-year resident of Arnold. He graduated in 2006 from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp where he played football and excelled in wrestling. He attended College of the Redwoods in Arcata before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2007.

Brummund met his wife, Michaela J. Brummund of Copperopolis when both were in the ninth grade at Bret Harte High School. The two courted for three years before officially becoming sweethearts at the beginning of their senior year in 2005. The couple was married in December of 2007 at Lake Tulloch Bible Church in Copperopolis.

Brummund was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping and hiking. He enjoyed Lake Melones summers on his family’s houseboat while working there during high school vacation. He was a fearless snowboarder. Lake Tahoe was one of his favorite places. Influenced by a natural curiosity and his beloved late grandfather, Ken Roderick, Brummund had a strong desire to travel the world. He enjoyed painting, sketching and creating unique masterpieces out of clay. He listened to all types of music, but his favorites were classic rock and reggae. Those who knew him best say he always had a smile on his face.

In addition to his wife Michaela, Brummund is survived by parents Gregg Brummund of Avery and Debbie and Kris Morris of Arnold; 18-year-old brother Cole Brummund of Arnold; and two step-sisters: Joslyn and Skyler Morris of Sacramento.

Brummund is also survived by grandparents: Beverly Roderick of Shingle Springs; William and Doris Brummund of Laguna Vista, Texas; Chester Morris of Yuba City; Carol Morris of Angels Camp. His in-laws are Joseph Otten of San Leandro; Leslie and Kevin Gause of Copperopolis; and brothers-in-law: Gabriel Gause and Morgan Gause, both of Copperopolis.

A memorial service for the fallen hero will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp. The gates will open 4pm. It has been suggested to bring a lawn chair or blanket as they expect a full house.

There will also be a Memory Board for the families. If you have any photos, letters, etc. you want to bring, please do so.
