Mark Twain St. Josephs Hospital Provides new Procedure for Tumor Removal
Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital and its affiliated general surgeons are using the most technologically advanced equipment and skills to remove parathyroid tumors which cause hyperparathyroidism, a disorder of the parathyroid glands. The new procedure localizes the tumor preoperatively using a nuclear tracer and gamma probe to direct the operation. Video-assisted, minimally invasive technology is used to help prevent nerve injury. .....
“The new procedure has a greater than 95% cure rate and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure” said General Surgeon Peter Oliver. “The disorder is usually found thru routine blood work, with symptoms such as muscular skeletal or abdominal pain, kidney stones or gallstones, psychiatric disorders or osteoporosis. The tumor can be localized by a nuclear parathyroid scan, also available at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital.” When a tumor is discovered it should be removed by a general or endocrine surgeon.
For more information about this new procedure, contact the Surgical Services department at 754-2523.
Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a not-for-profit, 25-bed general acute care hospital serving all of Calaveras County. Established in 1951 as Mark Twain District Hospital and centrally located in San Andreas, the hospital is partnered with Catholic Healthcare West to further strengthen this rural hospital to meet future community needs. The hospital is supported by 34 active physicians practicing in 24 specialties.
