Letter to the Editor~by Bill Senger

"McManus Mailer Makes No Sense..."Now there you go again." As a self-annointed conservative, Bill McManus should be familiar with Ronald Reagan's oft-repeated quote. Once more, his handlers at the Calaveras Business Coalition have cobbled a chicken-little campaign mailer based on fantasy rather than fact. ...

I'm curious. Do you guys make this drivel up, or do you actually hire somebody to read tea leaves?

This time around they claim a 45% cut in our Sheriff's Department over the past three years. Where do they get these numbers? Public safety receives the highest percentage of the county budget and has remained stable for the past three years. This lie is so blatant that Sheriff Downum felt compelled to record a radio rebuttal for the Callaway campaign. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion; no one's entitled to their own facts.

While they're at it, why not sound the alarm that only 3-4 deputies are available at times for the entire county? This has been the case for years, so what's their point? Our deputies have mutual aid backup from detectives, CHP, park rangers, and Angels Camp PD. Did the CBC just figure this out? And true, your call for help may be delayed because law enforcement resources are assigned by priority, not paranoia. Reports that the mother ship is calling you may have a longer response time.

Oh yeah, that $350,000 they claim was spent for an "unusable" yard waste chipper, that was for a screening machine at the Milton site. It removes dirt and gravel from root balls before they are ground up for use as biofuel and landscaping mulch. It's part of that "green thingy" you may have heard about.

And what unctuous clown came up with the $1 million cost of a general plan? There is a difference between money budgeted and money spent. The $250,000 quoted for neighboring counties wouldn't even cover the cost of an Environmental Impact Report. If the zeros make the CBC's candidate dizzy, maybe this isn't a good time for a career change.

It is easy for an inexperienced and uninformed candidate (or his carpet-bagging sponsors) to make ambitious promises to solve all our problems, but how will they do it? So far, what we've seen from the McManus campaign has been all hat and no cattle. Judging from McManus' inability to follow simple filing instructions and meet deadlines, he would have a difficult time qualifying for a job in a fast food drive through.

These difficult economic times require intelligence and experience to preserve our essential county services in spite of our dwindling budgets. Merita Callaway brings those qualities to the table. She has served this county well in the past and I see no reason to doubt that she will continue to do so.

Bill Senger"

Mr. Senger,
I can only comment on the cost of the General Plan, and even there, until the County sends me the Mintier Harnish contract and all supporting documentation that I requested on June 1st, I'm not in possession of all the facts. Here's what I do know. The County spent over $500K through 2008, but then the billing stops, and the plan is not complete. Why ? Is there an outstanding balance, and how much more work needs to be done ? Was the contract shopped around for competitive bids ? Even though Augustine Land Planners did Angels Camp, Sonora, Tuolumne County, Merced, Lodi, they were not given the opportunity to bid. If you Google 'Mintier Harnish - Lawsuits', you'll find a trail of litigation from every project they took on. Augustine has NO litigation trailing. Augustine could complete our General Plan from start to finish, for approximately $250K, and we already paid Mintier Harnish over $500K. Augustine works with all constituents, protecting the environment and property rights. I have a lot of questions, and not many answers, YET.
It's time we held our elected officials accountable, to all the voters, not just a few with 'pet projects', right ?

    Mr. Hull,

I have read many of your responses on Pinetree over the past few weeks and they are riddles with innaccuracies and misinformation. Why shudl I believe anything that comes out of your mouth?

Why do you end each comment you write with a question?

I have no idea who you are, but I've included links, to support my claims, or I indicated I was waiting for the county to send me information, and when I mentioned that our school system needs to be one of the components that would be of interest to attracting Hi - Tech business to the area, I have 4 years of accurate data. I also included my e-mail address in one of my blogs so anyone that would like to participate could step out, instead of 'snipe' from behind the curtain. John S. Hull

    Mr. Hull,

Good questions all. I would be interested in learning what you find out when you receive the documentation you requested.

I agreed, we should hold all our elected officials accountable. I think many of the posts we see on this site are from residents who over-estimate the power and purview of individual elected officials. Attempts to condemn a single supervisor for the global recession or a nonexistent cut in public safety are foolish. I much prefer your methodical approach to collect the facts before pointing fingers.

Unfortunately, many of the comments we see are reminiscent of the "Ready, Fire, Aim" school of thought.

    Bill Senger

I will give the county 30 days ( July 1st ) to respond and if by then I don't hear from them, I'll gather a group together and go to San Andreas ( The Black Bart Gang). I will post the findings, good, bad or otherwise. JSH

The McManus campaiagn has been a train wreck from the start.

If you have a contribution to make, step out in the open and participate. Just because you and I might be on different sides of an issue, or you and Mr. McManus might be on different sides of an issue, or even Mr. McManus and I might be on different sides of SOME issues, open debate is healthy. If you have a legitimate concern or issue, step up to the plate and let's hear it. Throwing rocks at someone's house in the middle of the night is not the best way to get a homeowner to mow their lawn. John S. Hull

I liked that "throwing rocks" comment! How about passing it on to Mr. McManus?

The problem is, McManus doesn't know the issues and his handlers have their own.
