Mind Matters Clinic Offering Series of Summer Programs

Mind Matters, the non-profit clinic that provides help to individuals and families dealing with the consequences of autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), and learning disabilities, will be offering a series of special summer programs for various age groups at its Murphys location, 150 Big Trees Rd. "Working With A Partner"... The first of these will be “Working With A Partner” in which students will participate in a variety of fun activities with peers while practicing the skills needed to work and play cooperatively. The eight day program will be presented Monday through Thursday, June 21 through 24, and June 28 through July 1. Grades 3 through 5 will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and grades 6 through 8 will meet 1 to 3 p.m.....

During the daily sessions, participants will be practicing how to cooperate with each other, to agree or disagree appropriately, and ways to compromise and come to a mutually acceptable decision when there are differences of opinions. Some of the sessions will include role-playing that will be videotaped and replayed for discussion.

"Food, Fun, Friends"
“Food, Fun, Friends” is designed for teens and young adults and is scheduled for Thursday nights, 6 to 8:30 p.m. starting June 10 and running through July 15. Each week the young men and women will work cooperatively with a small group of peers to plan a light meal and a fun activity. They will develop interactive skills while having fun eating and socializing.

"Edu-Theraputics"
Beginning Monday, July 5, the clinic will conduct a series of hour-long classes called “Edu-Therapeutics,” a unique learning system based on how the brain works and the best way for it to learn. It offers effective solutions for overcoming dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, and reading challenges. This program identifies the underlying cause of the learning inefficiency, and then addresses the symptoms. It succeeds because it changes how an individual uses the brain.

Presented Monday through Wednesday at 10 and 11 a.m., each class consists of five or six highly motivating games and activities that change on a daily basis using proven tools, materials, and techniques to target specific learning issues.

"Social Thinking"
“Social Thinking” classes will begin Tuesday, July 6 and will be offered at 1 and 2:15 p.m. Students will be grouped according to age and will learn how to establish and maintain friendships by understanding the perspective of another person and how his or her actions affect the feelings of others. They will also learn to deal with bullies, to look for and interpret social clues, and to distinguish expected behavior from unexpected behavior. They will develop other complex skills required for social success.

Classes meet once a week for an hour. Facilitators will teach the students how to become social thinkers through fun, small group settings. There will also be a ten-minute interaction with parents and guardians.

"Fast ForWord"
“Fast ForWord”, a computer based learning program designed to help students who are having reading difficulties, will be offered July 12 through August 20 at 1 p.m. Designed by Scientific Learning Corporation, it requires a significant commitment on the part of the student and his or her family. Sessions run for 90 minutes, five days a week, for six weeks. Since each participant must use a designated computer terminal the sessions can accommodate three students.

The program emphasizes the link between spoken and written language to guide students to become proficient grade level readers. It works by exercising the brain to process more efficiently, the way physical workouts train the body to be more fit and strong.
Information on all these summer programs, including the costs involved, is available on the clinic’s website mindmattersclinic.org or by calling 728-2184.

Because Mind Matters is a non-profit clinic it is able to offer its program at a greatly reduced price. It also seeks charitable contributions and grants to help defray the cost for families that need assistance.

Mind Matters is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and donations to help it extend its services are always welcomed.
