Letter to the Editor~by Sheriff Dennis Downum

"Dear Editor:

SUBJECT: Clarification...A candidate for Calaveras County Sheriff continues to tell citizens that the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is “hiding over nine hundred thousand dollars” that could be used to keep deputies. I would like to clarify this issue. When the candidate first made this statement, the fact that we had over $900K in our budget was technically correct however; that money has been allocated for over a year by various resolutions from the Board of Supervisors. It should be noted that this candidate was present when these funds were allocated.....

The practice of Calaveras County is to make transfers from designated funds to the county at the end of the budget year. Those transfers have been made:

■ Five hundred thirty-two thousand dollars for employee retention

■ One hundred eighty-five thousand for grant match (the grant brought in one million six hundred thousand for the communications project).

■ The remainder has gone for vehicle replacement, soft ware purchase and retaining our
Washington Lobbyist which has brought several million in revenue to our county.

After these transfers were made, we now have $3, 293.11 remaining.

I hope this clarifies this issue.

Dennis Downum"
