Letter to the Editor~by Sharon Romano
Reading the local papers and watching allegations flying around, you’d think we lived in the DC Beltway instead of Calaveras County. What has happened to candidates letting the voters know what they stand for and what they are going to do if elected rather than hurling accusations, half truths and out right lies about their opponents? This is a critical time for voters of Calaveras County. We are going to decide who is going to head four important functions of our local government – the Treasurer-Tax Collector, the Auditor-Controller, the Assessor, and the Clerk-Recorder. In addition, we are going to decide on a new Sheriff and will be voting for Supervisors in districts three and five. ....
Voters, it is more critical than ever to be informed. Go to candidate forums and ask tough questions. Does a candidate willingly answer questions from constituents or the press? And when answers are given, are they the truth. Talk with your neighbors. Look at the candidate websites. Check facts.
Find out who is financially supporting a candidate. Is there “big” money behind any particular candidate, or are they supported by smaller individual donations? Are the candidates readily disclosing who their financial backers are? What is a PAC (Political Action Committee)? Why would someone be more comfortable donating to a PAC rather than directly to a candidate? Are they hiding something?
Who has the relevant experience to do the job? Learn the responsibilities of each position. Did you know the Treasurer-Tax collector is responsible for managing a portfolio worth tens of millions of dollars? Or that the Auditor-Controller can get thousands of reimbursement dollars from the Federal Government for Calaveras County? Who has the pertinent knowledge and experience to do the best job?
Most importantly, look for candidates who have the interest of Calaveras County at heart. You’ll only know that if you ask questions and get involved. Be an informed voter in this election. Don’t guess. It’s just too important to the rest of us.
Regards,
Sharon Romano"
