The 82nd annual Jumping Frog Jubilee is May 13-16 at Frogtown in Angels Camp. This year’s theme pays tribute to the man who started it all -- “Celebrating the Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain.” The tale of a jumping frog he came across in Angels Camp launched Twain’s literary career in 1865 and added a colorful twist to Calaveras County’s Gold Rush history.
The State Capitol Frog Jump began in the 1970’s when Congressman John Garamendi, a Calaveras native, was serving in the State Assembly. The event is currently hosted by Senator Dave Cox who represents Calaveras County.
The State Capitol Jump has since been expanded to include members of the Capitol press corps. Trophies are presented in three categories -- longest jump, shortest jump and media jump.
Accompanying the frogs on their promotional tour are the Frog Wranglers, a volunteer group dedicated to the history and community pride reflected in
the Jumping Frog Jubilee.
