Slam Poet Coming to Columbia College in April
Columbia College and the Academic Wellness Educators committee are delighted to present two workshops and a short performance by Christina Perez, Latina Slam/Performance Poet. Ms. Perez will lead two workshops to introduce Slam/Performance poetry and how it can be incorporated into teaching—both workshops will be held at Columbia College, one on April 13th from 4:00-7:00pm in Fir 3 and the second on April 14th from 8:00-11:00am in the Tamarack ITC. The workshops are designed for college and high school teachers but all are welcome. A short slam poetry performance by Christina....
Perez will be held on April 14th from 11:30-12:00 on the Columbia College Tamarack Terrace. All three events are free – but space for the workshops is limited. Call or email Adrienne Seegers (209) 588-5275 or seegersa@yosemite.edu to reserve space.
Christina Perez’s work is described as comedic, political, self-exposing, and she hopes, connecting. Her poems are deeply personal and honest. Christina is a miner for words that get to the point, get down to the bone, all the while maintaining deft complexity. She is explosively exciting to watch. She uses voice and body to add layer, depth, and power to her art. At times loud, soft, slow, or at breakneck speed she may whisper or use heavy breath while her arms, hands, fingers and whole being are all contributing to the performance. Christina can sing and sometimes, she does. She can take you from tears of sadness to tears of belly wrenching laughter.
Christina was a finalist to represent Berkeley for the 2009 Individual World Poetry Slam. She will be a presenter for the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference in July 2010 and taught a workshop in January 2010 for at risk youth as part of a continuing series. She is a Poetry in the Schools teacher and a Poetry Out Loud Teacher. You can find Christina performing regularly at the Berkeley, San Francisco and Oakland slam venues.
