Fuel Reduction Project Begins on Highway 108 ~From Lisa Williams
an Andreas – On Thursday, February 4, 2010, Baseline Fire Crews comprised of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation inmates and supervised by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will begin work on a fuel reduction project along both sides of Highway 108 between the west and east entrances to Twain Harte. The fuel reduction project is located inside Cal Trans right-of-way and will include pile burning and chipping where feasible. Motorists should use caution when traveling this section of Highway 108 and be vigilant for smoke and personnel working in adjacent to the shoulder of the highway...
This project was prepared for funding consideration by the Highway 108 Firesafe Council and is a Community Assistance Grant through Proposition 40 approved by voters. Crews will be working through the winter months until April, 2010. The project coordinators are Highway 108 Firesafe Council President Jerry Tannhauser, and Director Bill McConnell.
Project goals are to reduce fuel loading and highly flammable vegetation on both sides of the highway. Roadsides are locations where most ignitions take place in a typical fire season. Reducing fuels immediately adjacent to this segment of highway will reduce the risk of a large fire occurring.
Multiple dwellings are located directly adjacent to this project area and will benefit by the reduced fuel loading. The project will also improve forest health by reducing overstocking of small conifers and a build up of brush under story that has occurred since the highway was constructed.
CAL FIRE Unit Chief Mike Noonan says, “This project is long overdue for this stretch of Highway 108 and this work will definitely reduce the risk of a roadside fire in the treated areas from becoming established and will make the job for firefighters easier should a fire start.”
For questions on this project, please contact Battalion Chief Barry Rudolph at (209) 419-4415 or Area Forester Adam Frese at (209) 532-7424.
