Winter Adventure Programs Offered at Pinecrest
Sonora, Calif., (January 7, 2010)…The Forest Service today announced that, the Summit Ranger District and the Pinecrest Nordic Ski Patrol will offer two programs in the snow during January and February. The programs are geared toward families and individuals interested in having fun or getting exercise in the snow while learning about winter safety. Each Winter Adventure will last approximately two hours and will not require skis or snowshoes in order to participate.....
Members of the Pinecrest Nordic Ski Patrol will demonstrate how to build emergency shelters in case you are caught out in a storm. They will also emphasize basic navigation skills, proper winter clothing, the “Ten Winter Essentials” to take along, survival techniques and “Leave No Trace” ethics. These interactive programs will be held at the Crabtree Nordic Trailhead near Dodge Ridge Ski Resort.
Meet at the Nordic Trailhead in Pinecrest, California, located just off of Dodge Ridge Road (a right turn immediately before the entrance to Dodge Ridge Ski Resort), approximately 30 miles east of Sonora. The programs will run from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Participants may want to arrive a little early to allow time for parking and getting dressed for the weather.
Those participating are advised to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and wear warm, layered clothing, gloves, hats and snow boots. Bringing a lunch is a good idea for participants who are planning to stay and play afterwards. Trail maps will be available for those who want to ski or snowshoe after the program.
Program Schedule:
Sunday, January 17
Winter Adventures -Irene Patton & Pinecrest Nordic Ski Patrol Volunteers
Sunday, February 14
Winter Adventures -Irene Patton & Pinecrest Nordic Ski Patrol Volunteers
These programs are free of charge and will take place regardless of the weather. For more information, call the Summit Ranger District at (209) 965-3434 or visit us on the Stanislaus National Forest website at: http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/stanislaus.
