The original groups of persons prioritized to receive the H1N1 vaccine has been expanded.

The H1N1 vaccine will be available to all persons over 6 months of age at these clinics. “We have sufficient H1N1 influenza vaccine to make it available to all persons wanting protection,” reported Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer.

The Public Health Department has offered the H1N1 influenza vaccine to high risk persons at local schools and conducted one previous community clinic for high risk persons. There are at least 2000 doses of the H1N1 influenza vaccine that will be offered at the two upcoming clinics. Vaccine availability is also increasing in local doctor’s offices and will be available for patients to receive from their primary care provider.

Children under 10 years old who were immunized at elementary school clinics in November will be offered the recommended second dose during December at the schools. “These children need a second dose of the H1N1 vaccine for best protection,”

Dr. Kelaita said.

Persons with higher risk of serious illness, including hospitalization and death, should be immunized, according to the Public Health Department. This includes pregnant women, persons 6 months – 24 years, and persons 25-64 with underlying medical conditions. “While I urge high risk persons to be immunized, we’re glad to have enough vaccine now to offer protection to others, such as seniors,” Dr. Kelaita added.

Information about the H1N1 vaccine and the community clinics is available from the Public Health Department at 754-6460 or at www.calaveraspublichealth.com
