CHARLIE CREIGHTON TO HEAD MURPHYS COMMUNITY CLUB IN 2010~by Bob Reagan

Murphys, CA...Charlie Creighton will be the new President of The Murphys Community Club and two new local residents have been added to the board it has been announced by outgoing President Michal Houston. The officers and board members will be installed by Supervisor Tom Tryon at the club’s fifth annual Holiday Dinner Dance on Friday, December 11 at Ironstone Vineyards on Six Mile Road in Murphys. The general public is encouraged to attend. “As I complete my term in office I am very pleased to be able to turn over the leadership role to Charlie who has demonstrated great energy and a devotion to the goals of the Murphys Community Club,” states Houston. “This year he did a fantastic job in organizing our First Fridays in the Park series.” ....

Creighton is a San Francisco native who grew up in San Mateo, graduated from Serra High School and Arizona State University where he met his wife of 42 years, Judy, who has become known as the Calaveras Cheese Lady and is a regular columnist with Sierra Lodestar. Together they owned specialty food stores plus a café and bakery in San Francisco for 25 years. He is a professional baker.

The Creightons lived in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco for 37 years and have two daughters. After owning a cabin in Hathaway Pines, they retired to Murphys in 2005. An avid golfer, they moved to Greenhorn Creek in 2007 and still own property in Murphys.

“The charm of Murphys Community Park was one of the reasons we were drawn to live in Calaveras County,” says Creighton. “I am committed to working to ensure its continued success for the enjoyment of all.”

The two new board members are Kimberly Pratt and Debbie Washburn.

Kimberly Pratt lived in Arnold from the age of 9. She graduated from Bret Harte High School in 1990 and completed a BA at UC San Diego and earned an MA at Georgetown University in Washington DC. She traveled and lived overseas for many years, working as a UN speechwriter, in counter-terrorism research, political journalism, and as a communications manager in the high tech industry.

She moved to Murphys a year ago to be close to her fiancé Tom Pratt.

They were married in August. She now works with her husband, and his father, John, at Thomson & Pratt Insurance Associates, a family-owned fine art and wine insurance agency.

Debbie Washburn, who has been an active volunteer with the Murphys Community Club, moved from Southern California to Sonora in 1973. It was there she met her future husband Bill Washburn. The couple have been married for 30 years and now live in Murphys. Before retirement, Debbie had a 20-year career in the escrow and title business at Yosemite Title in Sonora.

The Washburns take full advantage of what the Gold Country has to offer and have enjoyed boating, water skiing, camping, and white water kayaking trips. They are also avid gardeners. Debbie has two stepchildren, Wendy, a successful realtor in the Bay Area, and Eric a RN working at at Folsom State Prison.

The Murphys Community Club is the organization responsible for the oversight of the popular Murphys Community Park. It is also the sponsor of the annual Murphys Homecoming, and presents events such as Town Hall Meetings, First Fridays in the Park and band concerts at various times during the year. The club is always seeking new members. Anyone interested in joining should call 728-8183.

Tickets for the Holiday Dinner Dance are $45 per person and are available by calling event coordinator Sue Friedman at 728-8183.
