Therapy Dogs of the Sierra, Chapter 186 in Sonora, CA.

Sonora, CA....Therapy Dogs of the Sierra, Chapter 186 of Therapy Dogs International have been chosen to host the DSR testing in Sonora. This is the first time a TDI chapter in the western states has been chosen for this testing. Some of the Therapy Dogs are also going to be filmed for Schutzhund/TDI test for a new TDI group forming in Germany. The president of Therapy Dogs International will be here from New Jersey for the testing and filming. The filming will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 12th and 13th.
DSR (Disaster Stress Relief) testing will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 14th & 15th.....

The DSR dogs work with traumatized people. This is a little different than working in a controlled situation. It could be in shelters, or where helpers are stationed. They sometimes need the dogs more than anyone else. In a situation like Katrina, they had to travel with the dogs from site to site. They don't go to the actual disaster site. In NYC-9/11 the dogs traveled with family members on a Ferry Boat to Ground Zero.

Some of the requirements that must be met by each dog are:
1. Dogs have to be tested at a fire station around the fire engine and the sirens going off at random times and men in uniform
2. Dogs have to “Down” in a line while people step over them
3. Dogs must be able to be transported in a van with several other dogs and all get along
4. Dogs have to Sit, Down or Stand/Stay for 3 minutes with handler out of sight
5. Dogs have to visit a care home and go up an elevator. Casa Viejo has agreed to have the test there.

The handlers are not told what the rest of the test will be ahead of time. If all dogs pass the test, then the handlers must go online and take the FEMA tests.
Therapy Dogs International, Inc. is an organization dedicated to the regulation, testing, selection and registration of qualified dogs and handlers for the purpose of visitations to hospitals, nursing homes, schools and facilities or any place where therapy dogs are needed. The primary objective of the TDI dog and handler is to provide comfort and companionship by sharing the dog with the patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions and wherever else the Therapy Dog is needed. This is done in a way that increases emotional well being, promotes healing, and improves the quality of life for the people being visited and the staff that cares for these people. The Sonora Chapter has 78 registered handlers in their group along with 89 dogs.
