Calaveras Jr. Redskins Absolute-Shutout Weekend~By Tammy Beilstein

Calaveras County, CA....The Calaveras Jr. Redskins had an amazing weekend as their Varsity, JV and Bantam teams EACH walked off the field with a shutout! VARSITY: Once again the Jr. Redskins Varsity team dominated the scoreboard – this time, as they played against the Jr. Bullfrogs on the Bret Harte field. Final score after their 4th shutout of the season, 37-0. Jr. Reds Varsity Coach, Perri Turner said, “We only had 22 offensive plays the entire game. We also had great field advantage due to their turnovers. This was a good game and I give the Jr. Bullfrogs a lot of credit.”....

Outstanding offensive players this week include an awesome Danny Gilmore who had 3 carries for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Michael Seawell who stirred up the crowd with 4 carries for 26 yards and 1 touchdown, and then thrilled the gang when he returned a kick 76 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Justyn Thornburg was once again a benefit to his team as he went 2 for 4 for 50 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, a powerful Grant McKinney lead the team with 6 tackles, Emment Barrett threw down 5 tackles, and Blake Ehlers, Travis Rigsbee and Evan Pavlacky each had 4 tackles. Pavlacky also had a fumble recovery. One of the most electrifying players of the game was Malachi Stockdale who picked up a fumble and ran it back 36 yards for a touchdown. Stockdale also kicked a 32 yard field goal.

Looking forward to next week, Turner plainly said, “We are ready for the playoffs.”

JV:
Saturday’s game against the Jr. Bullfrogs ended in a win for the Jr. Redskins JV team with a final score of 8-0.
BANTAM:
Saturday’s game against the Jr. Bullfrogs ended in a win for the Jr. Redskins Bantam team with a final score of 12-0.
Jr. Reds Bantam Coach, Coach Mark Dunn said, “Brett Harte played us tough in this game. We won on great blocking from our offensive line that opened holes in the middle all day and our defense showed its strength again giving us our 3rd shutout ending the regular season.”

Outstanding offensive players this week include powerhouse Austin Garant who ran the ball up the middle with 10 carries for 80 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had one 6 yard catch from Dylan Byrd to wrap up a fine day. Jesse Batchelor also ran well with 4 carries for 44 yards and 1 touchdown to help score the only points of the game.

On defense, the tackler who had a monster of a day was Nicholas Quinday who was unstoppable with 6 tackles. Austin Garant had a great day with 3 tackles and Jesse Batchelor along with Arch Tanner followed with 2.5 tackles.

When asked about the upcoming Playoffs, Dunn said, “We feel good coming into the playoffs and we need to keep our Offense scoring. If our Defense can hold our opponents to 12 or less points I think we can make a strong push in these playoffs. We have some strong teams ahead of us and need to take it one week at time.”

* Next week, Saturday, October 24th, the Calaveras Jr. Redskins play various opponents at Calaveras High School in the Playoffs. Mighty Mites begin at 1:30am, Bantam at 3:00pm, JV at 5:00pm and Varsity earned a 1st Round Bye.
